I have heard that Miles mentioned Al Jones at LB. Can you give a recap of any football information that the coach gave at the 50 yard lunch? Also, can people post any info from Miles' speeches lately on the TAF tour?

One thing I found interesting in the Advocate was Miles announcement of the starting defensive line. He named Kirston as the other starting end and I had been hearing that it was going to be Chase.

I wouldn't take his comments to be set in stone in regards to KP and CP, he mentioned the WR group as well and never mentioned Skyler or XC or Amp Hill, surely those guys have a chance of winning the starting job between now and then too.

As painful as it was, I attended the “Lunch with Les on the 50” today for all the loyal users of this great site who didn’t have the $50 to spend…or simply didn’t want to spend it.(Seriously, I would have rathered been at work....bwaaahaahaa) So, I’ll cut through the bull**** and give you the run down of what was discussed.

Skip opened up by informing everyone to eat as much as they liked…after all, it would have taken a lot of eating to make up your $50. He then introduced General Richard, CEO of Tiger Athletic Foundation.

General Richard first made it clear that it wasn’t the AD’s office’s intent to ever have the West Upper “completed” by the start of the season. The goal was to have a seat, concessions, and restrooms for everyone while all the other amenities were to be completed by February of 2006. He made it clear that this was a project that any other school would have stretched over a 2 year period, however, LSU decided to try and suit its fans as best as possible while also improving the state of facilities. He said he feels certain it will be in a condition to allow every ticket holder a seat with the worse case scenario being no more than 1,000 fans being reassigned seating for the opening game against North Texas. Skip then came back to introduce Jim Hawthorne and agree with General Richard’s outlook.

Jim Hawthorne said stuff.

Finally, Andrew Whitworth, Kyle Williams and Rudy Niswanger were introduced and given a nice ovation. Upon Les Miles’s introduction, the three football players exited the stadium…..more on that later.

Les was given a generous standing ovation as he sweat his ass off under a tent right there on the 50 yard line. He thanked everyone and immediately asked that all TV cameras be turned off for the duration of his speaking. The TV crews obliged and dismantled their equipment completely. Les then explained that he had asked the players to leave once he was introduced because he felt it was his job to keep that side of him away from his players. Again, he said he was ready to have a good time and have fun and thought it was in the program’s best interest for them not to be present. So there we were….no TV cameras and no players…..ready to talk football.

Being my first time to see Les speak publicly, I was amazed at how he is able to hit the switch when it came to talking football. He got extremely intense talking about anything related to football while being pretty damn relaxed and funny just bull****ting about his job.

He addressed the recruitment of Ryan Perriloux and how he did nothing more but be extremely honest and explain to Ryan how special it would be for him to 1) play in front of his family, 2) put on the colors of his state’s flagship university and 3) come back once his career is over and continue to be a part of something so special, so close to home. He said Ryan immediately said “You know what, you’re right…I always wanted to go to LSU and that’s where I’m going to go.” Simple as that. Les said that would be the protocol for locking in the state’s best players, targeting the pride and enthusiasm surrounding LSU.

Les went on to talk about spring practice and said the offense was well ahead of the defense until late in the spring…which he expected given the change in personnel on that side of the ball. He spoke very highly of the running backs saying Addai, Broussard, Vincent and even Shy would do nothing but show their talent every time they touch the ball. He was extremely excited about the wide receivers, specifically Buster, Bowe, and Early. He never once mentioned X-Man’s name…not even when discussing special teams, which I thought was odd.

Defensively, up front will be Melvin Oliver at one end and Chase Pittman at the other. Kyle Williams and Wroten will anchor the middle. Hollis, Vaughn, and Kuale will be the LB’s and he was excited about the speed Kuale brings to the LB corps. He also said freshmen would likely contribute at the LB spot specifically mentioning Darry Beckwith and even Al Jones. He really likes the experience at both safety spots with Landry and Daniels returning and he said Prude will be a great corner with the other corner spot being shared and competed for by Chevis Jackson and Mario Stevenson. Again, he didn’t mention Sammy Joseph…not sure if that is indicative of anything in particular.

He said he was not pleased at all with what he saw from the special teams. He believes there was some serious improvement in special teams execution during the spring, but he hopes that improvement continues in the fall. The crowd erupted in applause.

Overall, he said that everyone associated with the program would be greatly disappointed if the team turned out to be anything less than “Champions”. He said it was great to be a part of a program with such high expectations since his biggest obstacle at OSU was to get everyone involved to believe they could beat anyone and everyone on their schedule. He said here, that is already ingrained in the players’ and the fans’ minds.

There were many lighter moments during his speech. Les enjoys telling jokes and telling everyone when they should be clapping. He also informed us that Smoke Laval was the one who introduced the dental plan that is a part of his pay package. Smoke told him that the dental plan was “If you don’t win, the alumni will kick your teeth in!”

All in all, it was enjoyable…nothing spectacular, but a nice event to say the least. Kudos to LSU for finding a way to suck $50 out of 200 people in the middle of the summer.
