Sure - there's a lot of football left to play but South Carolina is giving them all they want early... So with all the BCS prognostication - what would a Florida loss mean to all the what if's and maybe's in the West? Care to weigh in Grumpy Guru?
They are effectively out of the running. Arkansas would not be happy to see a Florida team lose, as far as their chances go. Same for LSU's fleeting chances. Florida needs to be as highly ranked as possible once Arkansas or LSU make it to the SEC CG.
And I assume it's a wash since the three-way hypothetical has all three playing the gators. And is it correct that our only real chance (in hypothetical land) is for Arky to drop 2 and LSU to somehow wind up more than 5 spots ahead of AU in the BCS?
No our best chance is for Auburn to lose to Bama. Then all we need to do is beat a once-beaten Arkansas. Otherwise, it is what you just described. Auburn will take a big hit. A loss at home. A mauling, actually. Against a team that has been extremely shytty since the 3rd game of the season. I hope they drop 11 spots like I had in the poll in that other thread. It's about where they deserve to be, #16.
Biggest implication of a Florida loss benefits USC. USC moves up to #4 in the human polls, just behind #3 Texas (should both teams win). Auburn was buffering both Florida and USC away from Texas, making it much harder for USC to pass up Texas. Now USC would control their own destiny, as wins over Cal and ND would push them either in a virtual tie in the human polls or just past Texas. USC would also be 2nd in the computer polls, whereas Texas would still be around 6 after all is said and done. In essense, USC would only have to get "close" to Texas in the human polls, not even surpass them.
This sucks, as I watch this game I want so bad to root against Florida but I really need to be rooting for them. I'm so conflicted that I guess my best move would be to just turn it off.
I don't thinks it really matters much because if Texas wins out, they'll likely get the nod in the BCS title game.
I don't think the Gamecocks have the horses to hang with Fla. through the 4th quarter. As much as I hate Fla. and Urban Myth I believe they pull this one out.
The other big implication of Florida losing is to wedge themselves between us and Auburn in the human polls. That could be the difference in being 6 spots ahead of Auburn in the BCS should we finish in a 3 way tie in the SEC West.
