The athletic departments at Indiana University and Purdue University have spent more than $47,000 combined since 2003 on nutritional supplements that are against NCAA rules for distribution to athletes.

Neither school will be punished, the NCAA said, just as the University of Texas and Texas A&M weren't punished in a similar case involving supplements last month. After that was reported, the NCAA cited confusion about the rules, issued a clarification to members and said it would enforce future violations.

The situation reveals how difficult it is for the NCAA to police nutritional supplements. They are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
