Not that I have much sympathy for Gator players' success, but I can't help but feel that, at this juncture in time, is Leak's draft status dropping because of his inability to grasp Meyer's offense? I mean, while I never thought Leak would be a pro-prospect as Eli or David Greene, but one had to feel that he was/is at least bound for some NFL camp in the future. However, it's becoming more clear that Leak isn't the type of QB for Florida's new spread option offense. Now, I just wonder how far he'll drop in the draft? It's odd how Urban's offense pretty much made Alex Smith a "house-hold name", yet it's having a distinct adverse effect on Leak. Oh well....better them than us! :thumb:
Yes his draft status is dropping by the game. The gimmick misdirection offense doesn't work where the linebackers are faster than the QB. Speed can make up for one wrong step. Man the defense was impressive tonight.
Leak doesn't like getting hit. He'll never be an effective option quarterback. Meyer needs a different kind of quarterback. Leak needs a different kind of offense.
Also, I don't see Urban's offense working in the SEC. At least not against the upper echelon teams where they speed at every defensive position (similar to 'Bama, Tenn., Georgia, Auburn and us). His little misdirections work well against teams with less speed, but against the big boys, even if the play might originally fool the defense, they are fast enough to recover--something that we saw tonight.
Michael Vick (aka Ron Mexico) ran the option at Va. Tech. He was a total bust in the NFL. :hihi: Coaches run whatever offense they want it hopes of moving the ball the best way they can. I don't think college coaches worry that much as far as the next level is concerned. I think NFL teams know what Leak is capable of despite running an offense that doesn't fit him.
I'm of the opinion that Leak is worried about the possibility of a career ending injury. The truth is, Florida should have rolled out a red carpet to get Spurrier back. Spurrier could have immediately impacted Florida's recruiting. Meyer brought in a pretty mediocre class, and his prospects for 2006 don't look favorable compared to what Tennessee and Georgia have already lined up. Leak is a casualty of Foley's ineptness. Meyer is going to get handled for at least three seasons. I doubt that he will be able to last beyond that.
I don't think Leak has a problem grasping the offense. I just don't think it's the best offense suited for his talents.
