It was ole miss talking about Tulane players. The article makes it sound like a coach was contacted, not players. http://www.nola.com/sports/t-p/index.ssf?/base/sports-21/1132644215247910.xml Ole Miss coach contacted Green Wave Assistant inquired about Tulane's football players transferring Tuesday, November 22, 2005 By Fred Robinson Staff writer RUSTON -- Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone this past weekend admitted one of his school's assistant football coaches contacted a Tulane assistant regarding Green Wave players possibly transferring after the season. Tulane athletic director Rick Dickson said Monday he would not respond to Boone's explanation for why it happened. Advertisement "I'm not going to engage in any public debate over semantics," Dickson said by phone from his temporary office in Irving, Texas. "We handled it in what we thought was the right way. I went through the conference office and asked them to handle it, then I went to the institution." Boone said he encouraged the contact by first-year Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron and his staff, according to Sunday's Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger. But on Monday, Boone said the contact was made because of miscommunication. "I didn't know Ed or one of his assistants was going to call Tulane," Boone said. "That's not what I asked him to do." Two weeks ago in a story that appeared on CBS Sportsline.com, Green Wave coach Chris Scelfo accused an unnamed school of trying to take advantage of Tulane's football program being displaced from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina. Scelfo said Green Wave players had been contacted about transferring. He did not grant interviews Monday. Boone identified Ole Miss as the school that contacted Tulane, but said no players were contacted. Boone said he only wanted Orgeron to get information about Tulane's players in case something happened with the Green Wave's program. Boone said they had heard rumors that Tulane's football program was going to be forced to disband because of financial problems brought on by Katrina. "I didn't want (Orgeron) to get caught trying to find out information about the players (at the last minute) if this in fact happened," Boone said. "I just said, 'Let's do our homework.' Ed probably thought it was fine for him or one of his assistants to contact one of (Tulane's) coaches." Boone said Ole Miss assistant head coach Shawn Slocum called a Tulane assistant that he knew. The name of the Tulane coach has not been revealed. Dickson said once he received the information from Scelfo, he reported the incident to Conference USA officials. "I'm comfortable we dealt with it appropriately," Dickson said. "If other incidents of this nature occur, we'll deal with it accordingly." While it is against NCAA rules for a school to contact players at another school, Boone said the contact by Slocum was not an NCAA infraction because no player was involved. Charles Bloom, an associate commissioner with the Southeastern Conference, confirmed Boone was given that clarification by the league after the incident. Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower said Monday that while the call wasn't an infraction, that doesn't mean it was right. "It's totally unethical," he said. "I don't know if it's illegal. If they contacted players, it was illegal. But contacting a coach, that's very unethical and you don't do something like that. That's pretty low." . . . . . . .
maybe Coach O wants to keep thing moving in the right direction at Ole Miss. Contact players from another team that can't beat LSU
No need to quote the whole thing. :thumb: It doesn't look like Ole Miss did anything wrong to me. Tulane acted like a little girl IMO.
