How in the world could anyone put together a list of top 100 plays and not have that on there? I can understand a top 25 list not having it but a top 100 list. Are you saying a 75 yard hail mary in an SEC game that is not only caught but then run 15 yards into the end zone is not one of the greatest plays in college football? The Kentucky people rushed the field too. Here is his explanation when asked about it in a chat: Ivan Maisel: (4:03 PM ET ) I'm laughing because the Bluegrass Miracle, if we had done a top 102 or 105, it would have been in. I think we had it loaded up and Sunday we still were figuring out what to put in. The earthquake game, I don't know. That one didn't really do it for me. It's interesting, but I didn't think it was one of the top 100. I did consider it, though. Here is the link: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2920557
I could understand if he did a top 100 game story and did not include it...but plays? How can you not put that on there?
To be fair, it's not "Greatest Plays," it's "Defining Moments." But, I looked at his list and they all seemed to have little "lesson sentences" to wrap up the story. What about the lesson of the coach who got his Gatorade bath (and was soon fired) and the fans who rushed the field before the game was over? That aspect alone makes it one of the funniest and most memorable plays ever. Maisel's a zero.
Re: Doug Flutie being ranked #1. Why do sportswriters collectively get aroused every time a short, white person is above average at sports? David Eckstein has gotten more mileage out of the fact that he's 5'8" and on a MLB roster than anything he's actually accomplished. It's like the little, weak kid on your little league team who gets a game winning infield single. Everyone forgets the kid who hit 2 HR and pitched 4 innings.
I think somebody's just a tad bit jealous because of the number times ND was named among the top 100 college plays vs. LSU.
You're right. It took all of the fun out of that bitch slapping LSU! put on the Irish a few months ago. I'd much prefer to have some hack think a pass play in 1913 was more significant.
I would think that those 14 plays would serve as a painful reminder of ND's past greatness vs. their current state of marginal relevance. Alabama has a similar situation.
