Maravich averaged 43.6 points a game for the 17 Junior Varsity games he played as a freshman. He was a man among boys.
Yep. My dad was telling me stories over Christmas about how he and groups of friends would drive from Mobile, AL to watch a JV game. That is amazing. And these were non LSU fans...they just appreciated complete domination.
It's a shame that Pistol Pete didn't get to play as a freshman, then his already untouchable records would have been set in stone.
If Chris jackson had played four years at LSU instead of leaving after his sophomore season, he was on a pace to break Pete's all-time scoring record.
Chris Jackson was the master of the 4 point shot, take the jump, seemed to stop in mid air to draw the foul and then shoot the 3 for the basket and the foul. I bet he has the most 4 point shots in LSU history. I'd be curious to see that stat.
The Pistol was certainly one of a kind. The guy was a scoring machine. The thing about the Pistol was how innovative he was. His game had so much flare with his dribbling and passing. He brought more a street style to the game than the conventional old school style of his era. Chris Jackson was the man! I grew up watching him, man could he shoot. He was exceptional quick. THe thing about CJ is not only could he shoot the outside J, but he was excellent at getting to the rim and finishing. His ball handling was second to none. Ill never forget the game against Loyola Marymount when they had Kimble and Gathers.
Pete was the only player who I ever saw play for the Tigers that made LSU winning the game seem almost inconsequential. You just KNEW he would do something to blow your mind that night. There will never be another quite like him. Not even close to being like him.
