Please don't ruin this thread. After what you and batty did I'm afraid to look at the Babe thread.

athlete of the year? i am no nascar fan, have never watched a race or been to one, vaguely know the drivers due to down time on sportscenter, but someone enlighten me on how exactly one would consider a nascar driver an athlete???

Sports Illustrated gave their Sportsman of the Year to Derek Jeter, who has never won the AP Athlete of the Year (last baseball player to win the AP Athlete of the Year was Barry Bonds in 2001).

Jeter became the Yankees all-time hits leader in route to helping them win the World Series. Other awards Jeter won this year include:
    --Roberto Clemente Award
    --Hank Aaron Award
    --Silver Slugger Award
    --Golden Glove
    --All-Star

I absolutely despise the Yankees, but its really, really hard to hate Derek Jeter. I still think that play he made against the A's in the playoffs earlier this decade by cutting a poorly thrown ball off and flipping it to Posada to get an out was the greatest play i have ever seen. If you have ever played baseball you know that a shortstop doesn't cut off balls thrown home, especially a ball coming from right field, so he basically freestyled that play.

oh and i apologize for the final countdown by europe.

i agree, but i also wouldnt consider a golfer an athlete either. i would actually think nascar involves slightly more athleticism because at least there is interaction with other competitors.

i wouldn't think one would need to be an athlete to be a golfer either. It probably doesn't hurt, and would be an advantage if you were athletic. Did you see where the Female Athlete of the year was Serena but the 2nd place female was a horse? Im surprised no one has said anything about that yet.
