I wanted to get another look at our projected starter in a real game situation and I just happened to have the Peach Bowl video.

Make no mistake, Miami was still a good team then. You can see it in the game, we just tore their heart out. Flynn was so damn cool. I mean ice cold! It definitely helped that he had Addai and the run game. I gotta feeling we're going to need that this season. If we do, I think Flynn can provide great seasons for our receivers. Early is a known quantity, but Flynn is accurate and I don't see a reason why Lafell and others will have trouble stepping up with quality QB play. One thing I noticed, was Flynn hit the receivers in stride and away from DBs. On some of Russel's longer throws quite a few hung in the air little longer than you'd like and the receiver would sometimes have to slow it up and catch it down in the gut (obviously not a function of Russel's arm strength). Flynn didn't have that on any throws I can remember.

Now don't get me wrong, Russel was #1 for a reason, and he can do a lot Flynn can't. Alls I'm really trying to say is that after re-watching that game, I'm confident we got a smart, accurate, calm, and VERY capable QB here. I don't need to be reminded that this was one game. I just felt compelled to sing Flynn's praises again after watching the performance he put on.

Oh, and just b/c I was so fired up after watching. A quick Flynn wallpaper. Yea yea, I reused some parts of previous wallpapers I made but that's why I was able to churn it out so quick. Comes in 4 flavors (resolutions). 2 widescreen and 2 standard.

Lemme know if there are any weird display problems. I've only seen it on my own display and I haven't done any color correction on it yet.

In all my excitement I almost forgot to mention. Watching the game brought me back in time a little bit and I think gave me a new perspective on that season as a whole.

Just like the next guy, I expect SEC Championships and NC contending years, but I was reminded by how much crap all of us were going through back then, and how much the team and coaches had to deal with, and to be honest, I think we were kind of hard on them while the season was going on (I know I was, and it had a lot to do with not seeing the big picture and having a new coach). I mean those guys helped out whenever they could during Katrina, the coaches had a hell of task on their hands. Remember how many games in a row we ended up playing? Not to mention travel to AZ State and opening with a heartbreaking OT loss to Tenn after the home opener was delayed for yet another hurricane. During the game film the ESPN bottom line kept flashing an announcement that the NFL Commissioner and Benson had agreed in principle to return to Louisiana for practice and possibly regular season for 2006. The whole thing just brought me back and made me remember how much misery our state was experiencing (still is in many respects) at that point in time.

I wasn't ever a Miles basher at the time but I admit I wasn't defending him much. I can honestly say I was optimistic about him but quietly had some reservations was taking a "wait and see" attitude at the time. Just forgot to throw that out there. Watching the game over again sort of put those feelings in perspective.

Good post. And to think Mr. Flynn comes into this season 2 years older. I expect he is chomping at the bit to lead this team to a bit season. It's really hard to win a BCS with all the associated drama and competing in the SEC. He should be able to blend strong leadership and maturity with talent quite well. I'm very optimistic. And to have Perriloux as our back up is a blessing.

I just want everyone to remember that Matt Flynn was a 4 star recruit, and he was ranked 16th nationally by rivals. He is not some Joe Schmo; he just happened to be in the same recruiting class as JR.

Not to mention Ryan Perrilloux was the #1 recruited dual threat qb. :thumb:

    2arms2legs,

Good Post! I agree that we should not worry too much about next season. I think Flynn will be fine, he has shown the ability in the Peach Bowl. He has the maturity. I'm not as concerned as I was when JaMarcus took over the starting job as a soph., as he was much less experienced than Matt is today. I think Ryan needs to get his snaps to develop in case of injury and for the following season, as Matt only gets the job for one year. But its a year I anxiously await.

To think, I've never seen a down of that football game. I was on a plane flying to Utah, got off to see MF get the MVP award. But I think that was good for the LSU community- after Katrina, to end the season with kicking a Hurricane's collective ace- good times.

I'm going to go look the game up on YouTube.

Great point man. That is a fact and probably the most remarkable difference I saw in Russell and Flynn in 2005. Considering that one of the complaints about Russell (even from his own mouth), is that he occasionally holds the ball too long and thusly holds up his receivers. A marked improvement in his performance this year, but in the little time I saw Flynn play, it seemed that he had better timing with the receivers. Perhaps this was a product of having a lesser arm to Russell (who doesn't?), but it certainly popped out in the Miami game.

If this is true, then it speaks highly to the ability of our last 3 receivers to get massive YAC, despite sometimes being held up, waiting for the ball. Considering that we will be breaking in several kids to this position, pinpoint accuracy and timing from Flynn will likely make it easier for our less experienced corps to break open big plays.

Very different styles from Russell and Flynn and I believe both will ultimately be proven successful at LSU. I think Russell could run a great deal better than we thought, and Flynn probably has a stronger arm than we know. Flynn seems to have the head for the game, and the nerve. Time will tell if he can be the unflappable leader that Russell proved to be. Being a fifth year senior with his undeniable talent, hopefully will come to fruition this year and bring us home the :crystal:.

As excited as I am about this season, I can't help but wonder if Perrilloux and our future QB's will benefit in the same way that Flynn has by backing up Russell. USC seems to have quite a bit of success by convincing some very talented QB's to wait their turn. I hope we can continue to do the same.

I think Flynn is going to have a great year. He has patiently waited his turn and he knows this is HIS year. We have a great backup in RP. Both of these young men seem to be great teamates and have put the team ahead of themselves.

Flynn was very cool-headed in the Peach Bowl. He wasn't a great QB, but he didn't need to be. What worries me is if we do need him to be great in a game... I'm not saying he can't or won't be, just that I do not know and that worries me.
