The guy was a good announcer. He was the voice of college football for many people. I don't think he was great, but I wouldn't bash him to the point that I would say I'd hit him in the face with a spiked bat. lol When I think of college football announcers, he comes to mind first.
In his prime in the '70s & '80s I think he was the best. He stuck to the play-by-play and rarely uttered a controversial word. In the twilight of his career he became a West coast apologist and had a front row seat on the USC bandwagon. Hindsight being 20-20, he probably should have stayed retired in 1998.
Given that he seldom had a kind word for LSU, it doesn't surprise me in the least to hear you say this.
There are a lot of announcers who arent apologists or homers for teams I support but I think they are good announcers.
