The Advocate reported this morning on the death of LSU great Ken Kavanaugh, Sr at the age of 90. Kavanaugh was a star both on and off the field. He was a receiver for the Tigers from 1937-39. During that period he achieved All-American honors. He was a contender for the Heisman Trophy in 1939. During that year he was also selected as the SEC's most valuable player. In 1963 he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. After leaving LSU he was selected in the second round by the Chicago Bears. In 1941 he led dthe NFL with a 28.5 yards-per-catch average. His pro football career was interruped by World War II. Kavanaugh enlisted and served as a bomber pilot flying 30 missions over Germany. His decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war Kavanaugh returned to the NFL and played six more years with the Chicago Bears, setting receiving records that still stand to this day. In 1951 he began coaching the Bears' receivers and in 1955 became an assistant coach of the New York Giants, a position he held until after the 1968 season. In 1971 he became a scout for the Bears and remained in that position for 28 years until his retirement. His son, Ken Kavanaugh, Jr. played for LSU from 1969-71 as a wide receiver. Thanks for the memories Ken.
I read that this morning. At least, football wise, doesn't look like he should have any regrets. Thank you for serving your country and may your soul rest in peace .
