The LSU 49–0 win over Kentucky was just what the doctor ordered for the Tiger football team and Tiger fans. LSU took control of the game from the opening kick off and there was never any doubt about the outcome of the game. My only major disappointment was that about 70 percent of the fans left the stadium at half time and did not get to see Matt Flynn, Ryan Perrilloux and Keiland Williams play.
I thought that all three quarterbacks, JaMarcus Russell, Matt Flynn and Ryan Perrilloux, played very well, and that Jacob Hester, Charles Scott and Keiland Williams ran the ball very well. All of the receivers caught the ball well and I was very pleased that Russell completed passes to tight ends Richard Dickson and Mit Cole. I was also happy that Jimbo Fisher installed a couple of plays for Trindon Holliday.
On the defensive side of the football the entire team played well, and there was major improvement in special teams plays. Tyson Jackson, Marlon Favorite and Luke Sanders probably played their best game of the season. On special teams, Harry Coleman, Jason Spadoni and Danny McCray all played great. Craig Davis returned punts for the first time in his career and was outstanding and gave Tiger fans great hope for the rest of the season as a punt returner.
LSU took a 7-0 lead with 8:56 to play in the first quarter on a six-yard run by Jacob Hester that completed an eight-play, 71-yard drive that took 4:37 off the clock. Hester carried the football six times in the drive. LSU increased the lead to 14-0 with 4:34 remaining in the first quarter on a seven-yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Bowe that capped a seven-play, 63-yard drive that took 2:36. The first quarter ended with LSU leading 14-0. LSU picked up eight first downs and JaMarcus Russell was seven for seven passing for 158 yards in the first quarter.
LSU increased the lead to 21-0 with 12:55 to play in the second quarter on a four-yard run by Jacob Hester that completed a nine-play, 61-yard drive that took five minutes off the clock. LSU increase the lead to 28-0 on a 48-yard touchdown pass play from Russell to Bowe with 8:59 to play in the second quarter. Colt David missed a 42-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter and LSU lead 28-0 at half time. JaMarcus Russell was 12-12 passing late in the second quarter and finished the first half 14-17. Jacob Hester carried the football 13 times for 44 yards in the first half.
LSU received the second half kick and went 65 yards in four plays with Early Doucet taking a direct snap and running 12 yards for a touchdown to take a 35-0 lead. The four-play drive featured a 38-yard run by Charles Scott. Matt Flynn and Ryan Miller entered the game with 11.55 to play in the third quarter and Flynn lost two yards on his first play. Charles Scott picked up 12 yards on second down for a first down, and then Flynn found DaWayne Bowe for a 15-yard completion that gave LSU a first and goal on the seven-yard line. On a second and goal, Flynn found Bowe for a touchdown in the end zone to make the score 42-0 with 8:28 to play in the third quarter. The 43-yard, six-play drive took 3:17. After LSU's 43-yard scoring drive, Kentucky drove inside the LSU 10-yard line on a couple of long pass plays when LSU defensive backs were caught out of position, but the drive stalled after a Tyson Jackson interception on the seven-yard line. Chris Jackson had to punt out of LSU's end zone and Kentucky took over near mid field. LSU's defense once again kept Kentucky out of the end zone and LSU took over at the two-yard line and marched 92 yards on nine plays with Shawn Jordan scoring on a two-yard touchdown pass from Flynn to make the score 49-0.
Ryan Perrilloux and Keiland Williams entered the game with 7:15 to play in the fourth quarter. Williams broke a 19-yard run on his first carry and had runs of 5, 6, 4, 5, 0, and 6 yards. Perrilloux showed some fancy footwork in a 14-yard run and a two-yard run.
LSU picked up a total of 546 yards in the game with 288 yards coming on the ground and 278 in the air. LSU's defense held Kentucky to 227 total yards. Charles Scott led LSU in rushing with 58 yards on nine carries. Keiland Williams picked up 47 yards on eight carries. Jacob Hester rushed for 44 yards on 13 carries. Alley Broussard did not play in the game. JaMarcus Russell completed 15 of 18 passes for 226 yards. Flynn completed four of six passes for 55 yards. Bowe led LSU in receiving with 6 catches for 11 yards. Davis caught four passes for 59 yards, Doucet caught four for 54 yards, Hester caught two for 19 yards, Mit Cole caught one for 18 yards, Richard Dickson caught one for 15 yards and Shawn Jordan caught one for two yards.
