And some very nice people. Was driving through the panhandle trying to find a "shorter way" to get to Colorado back in the 70's. We stopped in Hereford, TX and went to a steakhouse when we were on a McDonald's budget.
My GF then was very outgoing and would talk to everybody anywhere so we got into a friendly conversation with an older couple. After they left and I asked the waitress to bring our bill she said the people who had just left had paid it.

I was driving an old Land Cruiser back to Florida from AZ with my 7 year old and had just gotten into the Panhandle when it had a problem with the capacitor and wouldn't start at a gas station. I had the hood up and a guy came over then called a buddy who was a mechanic. He looked at it then left to go to his shop and see if he had one. This was a Sunday. A young couple who was eating in the diner was talking to us while we waited and said we could stay at their house if I couldn't get it running. Guy came back, no capacitor but we jury rigged a jump and I was able to get it back to Florida. Offered money and he would have none of it.
