It is main fundrasier for the Wally Pontiff Jr Fund. Since Wally was from the NOLA area, they wanted to do a game for fund there.

Last year before the inaugural Wally Pontiff Jr. Baseball Classic, Nicholas Pontiff threw out the first ball. He's scheduled to be in an LSU uniform tonight for the second game honoring the memory of his late brother, the former LSU third baseman.
The Tigers are scheduled to play Rice at 7 p.m. at Zephyr Field in Metairie.

Rice is no arbitrary participant. Wally Pontiff played his last college game against the Owls in the 2002 super regionals, less than two months before he died of a heart abnormality. Rice coach Wayne Graham later sent the Pontiff family the third base from Rice's Reckling Park, where the super regional was played.

Wally Pontiff Sr. wanted Rice to play in the Classic last season, but the Owls were unable to juggle their schedule. LSU played Southeastern Louisiana and won 9-3.

What a nice thing to do. It's good to read things like that after reading so much about players and coaches that are Grade A jerks.

So true, wish we got only the great stories to read myself, but that's not news I guess.
