Alright I am really starting to get pumped... 1st big test this year is on the road at Auburn... I am really pumped about this game... On the road, I've never won there and it is a hostile environment. I just wanted to stroll down memory lane with this rivalry: Now I know I didn't remember everything so feel free to correct the things I have wrong and add some of your own... Here are somethings that make this rivalry special: 1- 1988 the earthquake game - #4 Auburn comes into Death Valley against unranked LSU. Scoreless after the 1st quarter Auburn kicks a field goal to go up 3-0 before half. At the end of the 3rd quarter score was still 3-0 Auburn. In the top of the 4th quarter Auburn adds 3 more to make 6-0. To this point LSU has only been past the Auburn 50 1 time and they had only made it to the 45. LSU completes a few good passes and picks up a key first down from Hodson to Haliburton (TE) around the 10-15 yard line. It wasn't til 4 plays later in the back of the end zone does Hodsun find Fuller and the crowd goes so crazy that it sets off the sizemagraph reader across campus. 2 - The Jamie Howard Incident - I don't remember a ton about this game except that it was in the early 90s and LSU was winning the game until Jamie Howard continued to throw INT after INT (2 of which I believe were returned for touchdowns). I am pretty sure this game was played at Auburn. LSU would eventually go on to lose this game. 3- The Barn Burner - I believe the year was 1998. This game was played at night at Auburn and some building caught on fire outside the stadium. The flames were higher than the stadium and it literally looked like the stadium was on fire. This was the last time LSU has won at Auburn. 4- Hey Tuberville Smoke this - I really dont remember what year this happened but Tommy Tuberville (i believe was when he either first started at Auburn or may have still been at ole miss) lit a cigar after defeating LSU. The gloating struck LSU fans the wrong way. 5- Duvall vs. the Golden Band from Tigerland - The Punter or kicker (Duvall of Auburn) had come out at half time and started practicing kicks while the LSU band was still on the field performing. I believe he ran into a tuba player and got man handled. Again this was out of control. 6- Unneccessary Scoring - This was around 2000 i believe when Auburn pushed in a late touchdown with only seconds left in the game that they already had clinched instead of taking a knee and ending the game. 7 - Pass Interference... oh wait no we are going to pick this flag up - The pass interference call got most of the hype in this game becuase it came at such a crucial time. However the refs were absolutely horrible this game. There was for sure 2 flags picked up that were clearly pass interference. And 2 or 3 no calls that happened that were not called right in front of the refs faces. It really sucks to lose a game this way. 8 - Byrd man... I fly in any weather - most people remember last year dramtic last second touchdown from Matt Flynn to Demetrius Byrd to win the game.
The Jamie Howard INT game was during the day of our high school's homecoming during my senior year (of HS). I was watching at my girlfriend's house and was already thinking about LSU getting back in the top 25. After the 5+ years of misery, it made that loss so much worse (especially since it was early in the season) because the game was won. The next year was my freshman year at LSU and my first game as a student was Bring Back the Magic. Many forget that Jamie Howard redeemed himself with the big win, capped off by Troy Twillie's INT in the endzone on the last play of the game. The Barn Burner game was actually in '96. In '98, I made my only visit to Auburn and we won 31-19 to move us up to #6 in the polls. It was the highest we'd been ranked in a long time but back to back to back losses vs. Georgia at home (Quincy Carter / Champ Bailey), at Florida (even though we led at halftime) and Kentucky (Tim Couch) at home showed how quickly things can turn for the worse in a hurry. I don't think that can happen to this year's team but never underestimate the quantity of quality teams in the SEC and the psychology on 18-22 yr old minds when a tough loss has everyone in Tiger country questioning the coach, QB, Def. coordinator, and even the "pain" of having to play a day game. I'll worry about that down cycle when it comes. For now, it sure is great to be a (real) Tiger fan.
#4 - I could be wrong on this but if Tubby hadn't pulled his (childish) cigar stunt he might be the current LSU coach. #8 - A great last second TD pass but I will always remember this game as the 'chop block' game. Oh, and the game that a LSU defender eas called for jumping up and landing on a teammate. The first and only time that was ever called in the history of college football.
I try to focus on the positive, but yeah...the chop block game. But, most of you are really embarrassing us "old" people! I was AT "The Earthquake Game" as a student...babysitting my daughter during the Jamie Howard (Hallman, really) implosion...and at a bar my second wife and I used to hang out at for the "Barn Burner" game...before we had kids. In '04 (extra EXTRA point game), I was babysitting my son...while my second (and current) wife was shopping...pregnant with our second son. All I know is this...since my second wife and I were married,(almost 13 years), LSU and Auburn have pretty much owned the SEC W...but only LSU has :crystal::crystal:...so screw Allbarn.:thumb: As a lot of you know, my wife is known as Ol' Missy...an OM grad. Our first time out together after we got back from our honeymoon was when LSU destroyed OM at home in '95...Faulk was a BEAST that night. We attended the OM/LSU game the next year, and again, LSU destroyed them. I have slowly, but surely converted her...and now she bleeds a shade...however faint...of P&G. But she will forever loathe Tubby, so she's got that going for her.
i had forgot about that jumping on the back call... thats another good one... keep them coming i know there are more :milesmic:
you forgot to mention they were in the 4th quarter and the lead was large. maybe 4 INT and 3 returned?
You guys seem to have forgotten the game from a few years back when AU received an extra attempt at a field goal and won the game. I hope my memory is correct on this one!
