I thought it was a combination of his socialist political leanings (red) and his favorite holiday (Cinco de Mayo or 5/5).
We didn't have malls where I grew up. Had Main St. though. I don't remember teenagers hanging out there. ETA. Martin, so you don't have to ask, that's an observation on my life and has nothing to do with the OP.
$1 a gallon gas. Case of Busch was $8 and Big Macs were a $1. I used to buy kegs for $45 and charged $5 for all you could drink. That's how I made some extra cash 11th and 12th grade. Nothing to pull $150 on Friday and Saturday night. No malls around here. Lakes, boat ramps and cemetery parties. Threw lots of parties at the house, kegs on porch, and wasn't anything to have 25-30 people spend the night. You drink , you stay was our moto. Kids don't have much to do but ride, spotlight or bonfires. Big difference between city and country living.
Our Mall sucked... half the mall was vacant with empty shop space, the rest were stores that didn't cater to anyone our age then, except the Arcade. I used to spend a grip playing Cyberball... We hung on the Ones (one ways downtown), and threw parties on the dark gravel roads where the cops couldn't sneak up on us. Wasn't much do in that small town but drink, get stoned, fight and fuck. Pretty much what 9-12 grade was like there.
cant protect your kids. and if you think you are, you are not. doing my damnedest not to be a paranoid parent.
