The difference now is media. And the counterintuitive truth that we love to hear about and watch and read and hear about tragedies in a weird almost self serving way. I call it tragedy porn, people love it and love to cry and watch it on tv 24/7.

    gotta believe the numbers.

scrap your paranoid ADT contracts and for god's sake stop accompanying your children to the bus stop!

Amen to that. From the earliest age, I've pointed out thugs to my daughters on TV and anywhere we go and have told them, "Don't even THINK about dating a boy like that." I also point out girls acting like fools in one way or another and tell them exactly what's foolish about the behavior.

When my middle schooler was in pre-K, I was walking her to the car outside of her preschool. Two goth/emo boys from Plano Senior High right down the street were walking by. She asked, "Are those ghosts?"

    I told her, "No, but..."

She finished my thought, "...but don't bring a boy like that home."

    Exactly.

As for the bad neigborhood idea, my husband and I got into an argument last year because when we were driving through a bad area of downtown Dallas after leaving the Winspear Opera House. I told my daughters that they needed to be careful about which area of town to live in when they are out on their own. My husband thought that was sheltering them to the plight of the poor. I felt I was educating them on not buying a townhouse next to a housing project.
