http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=cnnsi-liststoendthesu&prov=cnnsi&type=lgns 1) Carroll, USC 2) Stoops, Oklahoma 3) Ferentz, Iowa 4) Tressel, tOSU 5) Petrino, Louisville 6) Meyer, Florida 7) Beamer, VT 8) Hawkins, Boise State 9) PhatPhil, Tennessee 10) Brown, Texas Why Mike Price isn't a top tenner is amazin'... almost as amazin' as #'s 9 & 10 making it. Ferentz is stuck in there with three names who have won championships... so hard to complain... and he'd probably be # 4 if Saban was still around. The thing about Tressel and PhatPhil is I doubt if either program would suffer if they left... which makes it hard to judge how well these two are coaching, given the talent they get.
That list is crap...Besides Mack Brown there should be a asterick and at the bottom is says this: *Rating depends completely on recruiting classes and not on how that talent level has equated on the field.
Mack Brown has won 10+ games the last 4 years? Mark Richt has won 10+ in 3 of those years and won a conference title in the SEC. Urban Meyer instead of Steve Spurrier? Give me a break. What a moron
Everybody loves knocking 9 & 10, but I have to tell you I'd be happy with either one of them at LSU. Both have done very, very good jobs at their universities, much better than their predecessors. Brown has a better winning percentage than Royal did and has 13 more years to try for a couple of national championships to match that total. And he coaches in a much tougher conference than Royal did. 70-19 is a pretty darn good record IMO. I believe that lik eFulmer he will get his championship or two in the near future. All Fulmer has done is win 80% of his games over 13 years, amazing record. And I'd have to say it is even better than it looks since the Vols usually play a good home and home series against a top program all the time. I'd take him over any other SEC coach except for Visor Boy based on coaching records. Now, if you add the crime blotter to his resume I'd probably change my mind. I don't see how you can say that tOSU or UT's program wouldn't suffer without those 2 guys without saying the same thing about any of the top college programs.
This list makes no sense. If he's going to include Boise State, Utah, and Louisville (and have two of them above Beamer no less), why not throw in some great high school or Pop Warner coaches? This time of year sucks. Bad lists that get us all worked up for no reason other than there's nothing else to do.
Hawker, I'm going to have to disagree with you about Phil Fulmer and somewhat about Jim Tressel. Everyone always cracks on Fulmer with Phat Phil, Krispy Kreme..etc. and say what you will, but his Tennessee's teams are always good, solid football teams. And if you don't believe me, Fulmer's 13-year career winning percentage is at .799 and he has had 8 double-digit winning seasons, averaging 9.5 wins a year - I'd take that in a heartbeat. Oh, and included in that 13-year career is a 13-0 National Championship season in 1998. And all of this has been done in the SEC, so crack on Fulmer all you want...but the guy can coach. And as far as Tressel is concerned...the guy's won national championships at Youngstown State and Ohio State. The one thing I'll give you with Tressel is that his programs at both schools have been under some big-time NCAA scrutiny. And for the life of me, how in God's name is Petrino, Hawkins and Meyer on this list and Steve Spurrier not? Plus, why are they ahead of guys who have won national championships or at least played in the championship game? Hawkins at Boise State, the Smurf Turfers....pppplllllease, if he's so great why isn't he at a major D-I school? This list is total crap! Crap I say, crap!
I think Phatimus and Mack are mediocre coaches in very nice positions. Darth Visor is a very good coach in a mediocre situation. Spurrier should be higher than Fulmer or Brown. Where would Nick place if he were still at LSU this year?
