"We asked LSU for permission to talk to Les Miles last week and we were given permission to talk to Les but not until after the SEC championship game on Saturday," Martin said in a statement. "Les Miles was one of our candidates. "I did not talk to Les Miles or his agent this past week in accordance with the wishes of [LSU athletic director] Skip Bertman and the LSU Athletic Department," Martin said. "This morning I did speak with Les' agent [George Bass] and he reaffirmed what Les said during his press conference yesterday -- that he was staying at LSU. "We wish Les and the LSU Athletic Department the best of luck in the future," Martin said. i am refraining from sending this to family members (jilted osu fans) who have been giving me hell for the past 10 days about how the "ink was already dry on the michigan contract". who, as recently as tonight (!) when i said i was happy because we have our coach replied "for now". but, i am gonna take the high road. "for now". time will prove me right. and i will get in my jabs down the road. especially with the one that called me on my way home from the arky game to make snarky comments about miles. i dont forget.
Coachspeak/ADspeak translation. This is a half truth, we have been talking to his agent for weeks, but can't say that and save face for us. We had to do this publically so we could officailly hire Les. He was the only person we truely considered. I am lying. I have been speaking to his agent the whole time. We had a deal worked out and everything. But I can't say that publicly. It will make me look like a fool. I called his agent again this morning. Les is still pissed off at me. LSU wanted him more, and outbid us. Plus we screwed the whole thing up by leaking that the deal was done, asking permission when we did, and in turn affecting Les' current football team. Man I feel like a bonehead. We have no effing clue who we are going after now, he was the only guy we ever seriusly considered. We are so screwed.
