These are the first comments I've seen by Miles about our defensive play against ASU. http://www.2theadvocate.com/stories/091405/lsu_lnotes001.shtml There we have it folks. Miles himself has said that it was NOT the defensive schemes, but the defensive play. Good news in my book. We have 2 weeks to get it corrected.
I like that he says tighter, hopefully implying tighter coverage which is where it all started fall apart. Using the phrase "very extreme" -- Yep, still a lunatic.
He didn't mention the god awful tackling techniques employed during the game. Don't look for major improvement against UT. Their offense is just as good as ASU. I just hope being in Tiger Stadium allows the defense to "get after it" a lot better.
How in the hell is that good news??? That scheme is terrible, and I'm not happy to learn that it will be implemented for the rest of the year. At all.:nope:
Interesting...my take could not be more different. You have athletic guys who were recruited to and coached in playing a certain (pretty damn successful) scheme, you throw said scheme away and take a "these guys will get the hang of the new stuff. Someday" attitude from the coach and I'm officially...uneasy, to put it politely. "That will happen." That will happen, coach? Damn if he comes across as too, too nice sometimes. Ugh. Can we push that Florida game back a few weeks?
In watching a replay of the game i observed a few things that would have changed the game alot . LSU dropped a couple of sure interceptions. The ASU QB was good but he forced the ball more than a few times when LSU should have made plays. Instead they converted many third downs that led to continued drives. Their offensive line was holding like crazy for most of the game. I saw many times that LSU defensive lineman were breaking away and the lineman grabbed them. I dont remember them getting 1 holding call. I did see LSU blitz on occasion but you have to give ASU credit they picked it up. I would agree that disguising coverages a little better would help. We need to rush a fast linebacker from up the middle more. Not neccessarily a blitz but pull a d end and rush from other areas. ASU QB was taking a short 3 step drop. Need to bull rush from the middle with stunts focused at pressure up the middle. Run a gap rush more than head up. Those are my observations anyway. Would also like to see us cut down on the penalties in the second game.
These guys know what they're doing, we shouldn't panic so much after just one game. Give it time, they(the coaches) are in their positions for a reason.
Well, I know I'm in the minority, but I believe that this was less about schemes & more about players playing than not. I agree that the schemes did need some adjustments & such, but if the players had made the plays and played better, ASU's stats would be drastically different. First off all, Keller would have thrown atleast 2 interceptions and given our offense the ball. I believe they scored on one of the positions, so that's minus 7 points for them & an extra chance at points for us. Secondly, all the blah blah blah about it being the first game, on the road, ranked team with a game under bealt, aftermath of katrina - all of that takes a toll & our players, understandably, played sloppy football that ASU was able to take advantage of. Thirdly, Pellini has coached some very good defenses & I don't believe that somehow he got to LSU and forgot what it was like to coach. PS: Don't forget, we used to complain about Saban's lack of adjustments & whatever else as well.
All I can say is that I wish someone would stand-up and admit that if we play the same defense in the SEC, we WILL NOT make the SECG, or even be in position to even talk about making it. Obviously BP and LM can coach, but our players can also play... they're not stupid.
