Ever notice that the Saints got all this love outside the state, where they were even called everybody's second favorite team. Yet, I never saw this same love directed towards the LSU football program. But, inside the state of Louisiana, which one is more popular and beloved- the New Orleans Saints or the LSU Tigers?
I guess that would definately be the Saints, cuz there is only one, but there are many schools in La, so the love is distributed...
For me it is and always will be the LSU Tigers in a landslide. A little story from when i was in junior high. Growing up in Shreveport the Cowboys were everyones favorite team and people always pulled for the saints but they were second fiddle. The Saints and the Cowboys were on at the same time and CBS had to choose and they chose the Saints game and people were picketing in front of the station and calling like crazy to CBS to get the game switched to the Cowboys. I dont know if it is still that way but i have always been a Cowboy fan first and a Saints fan second. If it came to picking LSU or Cowboys it would still be the Tigers in a landslide.
I think there is more love for LSU because we (historically) have won more (notwithstanding that really bad stretch in the early-mid 90's.)
If the Saints fortunes over the past 40 years would have been similar to LSU's then the comparison might be closer than it is. However, LSU has had 100 years to build up a rabid following while having a lot more good and great seasons along the way. And there is nothing better to fuel a love of a team than going to school there for a couple of years at least. I'd have to say the love for the Saints is more widespread in the city of New Olreans itself but that the love for LSU is much more widespread in Louisiana. I grew up being passionate about both but the Saints just wore me down over the years.Sometimes it was just too darn painful for me.
I think over the years it's definitely LSU because of how much success they've had but if the Saints keep playing like this past season the gap could get smaller.
LSU going away. The northern half of LA are cowboys fan (along with myself) and I actually hated the saints until this year. I hated the saints cuz of brooks, haslett, Tom benson. I have never felt anything but pride for the Tigers, no matter what. Yes, in N.LA they still show cowboys over the saints
I think it just all depends on the location. The Tigers are hated by some in New Orleans (Tulane fans), just as they are hated by some in Lafayette (USL fans) and in other parts around the state. In a sense, though, the Saints represent the entire state, although I can understand why people in Northern Louisiana may be more inclined to cheer for the Cowboys because they are closer to Dallas. For me, I will always be a bigger Saints fan than an LSU fan, having grown up in New Orleans and going to Saints games all my life, whereas I wasn't treated to my first game in Tiger Stadium until my sophomore year of high school (Dad went to Tulane, so I was force fed Green Wave propaganda until I was old enough to see the light).
Give me a break. LSU in a landslide. North Louisiana doesn't follow the Saints very well at all, but they are huge LSU fans.
