INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA banned the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments, but will not prohibit them otherwise. The NCAA's executive committee decided this week the organization did not have the authority to bar Indian mascots by individual schools, committee chairman Walter Harrison said Friday. Nicknames or mascots deemed "hostile or abusive" would not be allowed by teams on their uniforms or other clothing beginning with any NCAA tournament after Feb. 1, said Harrison, the University of Hartford's president. "What each institution decides to do is really its own business" outside NCAA championship events, he said. Guidelines were not immediately available on which logos and nicknames would be considered "hostile or abusive." The NCAA two years ago recommended that schools determine for themselves whether the Indian depictions were offensive. Among the schools to change nicknames in recent years over such concerns were St. John's (from Redmen to Red Storm) and Marquette (from Warriors to Golden Eagles). The NCAA plans to ban schools using Indian nicknames from hosting postseason events. Harrison said schools with such mascots that have already been selected as tournament sites would be asked to cover any offensive logos. Such logos also would be prohibited at postseason games on cheerleader and band uniforms starting in 2008. And I thought I had free time on my hands....
Sometimes I think the powers that be want us to forget about Indians all together. At least they stay visible and within the American subconscience when associated with sports. Maybe we should change the Thanksgiving story to include just the Pilgrims and the animals so that our grandkids won't know anything about the Indians and American Indian Culture until they are old enough to gamble... Auburn gives Eagles (and all birds for that matter) a bad name by allowing that beautiful creature to fly around that dump and the NCAA just turns the other way. What ever happened to Eagles Rights in this country?
The already had to change the name of the SEMO Indians b/c of that. Get ready for the Arkansas State Magnolia's ULM Rose Petals Florida State Gator-Canes I think that b/c animals take offense to names like that, we should ban all animal names as well. Everyone should be named after their state tree, Song, Flower etc.
WHEN are the powers that be at our schools going to have the intestinel fortitude to stand up and tell these idiots that they are there to regulate sports issues not morals or pc issues? I think it is time that the NCAA learns that they CAN BE REPLACED. They make their own rules, increase their own salaries, --no checks or balances---what a job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe they need to be told that they work for the NCAA not the NAACP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire
