    sad situation getting worse.

    Police officers resigning
"They were afraid they would have to go through New Orleans (to deliver the supplies)," Melancon said. Melancon said some of those waiting for pickup died of dehydration in the 90-degree heat that has afflicted the region since Tuesday.

Despair is also affecting those in New Orleans charged with protecting the city, said HL Whitehorn, the state police superintendent . Some New Orleans police officers have resigned rather than face the violence in the city.

"It's my understanding those who have resigned said they have lost everything and it's not worth being shot at and losing their lives," Whitehorn said. Whitehorn said he did not know the specific number of police officers who have quit their jobs.

Meanwhile, the US Senate yesterday approved a $10.5 billion emergency funding bill requested by George W Bush, the US president, to speed help to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The House of Representatives is expected to pass identical legislation today, readying it for Bush's signature. Bush already has informed Congress that in coming weeks he will ask for additional funds, once the scope of the disaster that hit Louisiana and Mississippi particularly hard is known. - Reuters

I am so happy that my brother is stationed at the fire house instead of working details (he is both a cop and a fireman).

they have no reason to be cops there anymore.. this isnt a job for cops, it is a job for the military. let the good men and women of the nopd come to baton rouge and work here.

No one would hire a quitter from the N.O.P.D. :dis: You don't turn your back on the department, the public and the city when they most desperately need you. These guys will never work as cops again and anyone hiring them would be a fool to do so. This is an absolute disgrace for New Orleans Police Department, and they've had their share over the years. I have family right now putting their asses on the line with 20 plus year careers in N.O. They're scared of this out-of-control mob violence but they won't quit or abandon New Orleans now, even though two of them could retire tomorrow. You might think they're SUCKERS & IDIOTS for putting it on the line, but I don't.

THIS IS NOT A RUMOR: NEW ORLEANS HAS FALLEN TO THE ARMED GANGS AND MUST BE RETAKEN BY GOV'T TROOPS. Police are fearing being executed by large gangs of armed criminals roaming, looting and now raping & killing the storm survivors. Police are only responding IN FORCE on a case by case basis from their Armed Compound & entrenched district HQs that are being manned with heavy ordinance. This renders them wholly ineffective at this point. The quitters have received one too many orders for action and most are just in a state of shock and have no faith in their leadership.

What? Most of them are very good people and citizens. The ones quitting are not considered in that group. The ones who took part in the looting, just hours after the storm, are not considered in that group.

Who are you people to judge anyone that would give up under these circumstances ? We are talking about people who lost EVERYTHING. You have NO IDEA how you would react under the same situation. To put these people down is just forking sad.

Well, if anyone here thinks that those cops are quitters and a disgrace, then I say go ahead and take their place! The NOPD needs you......sign up! :nope: Probably not, huh?!!??!

All I know is that there is NO WAY the NOPD can handle the chaos of New Orleans. Maybe this is a good enough reason to get our troops back from Iraq? :hihi:

    You sir, are a buffoon.

As for people quitting. That would seem to suit your demeanor. There is something called duty. DUTY. When a person swears an oath, they uphold that oath. The more cops down there, the more people get saved. Their city, what's left of it, needs them.

Look at it this way. Let's say we are attacked here in the U.S. by one of our enemies. The initial attack destroys cities and causes many, many casualties. What would you say if the military, who is sworn to protect and defend, start quitting saying that they "just can't stand it anymore". "We've lost everything. Sorry America, your on your own". On a smaller scale, that is what we have.

This is not the same as quitting WalMart. These people took an oath. They should uphold that oath. In this line of work, and trust me, I know a little about it, Duty is first, Self is a distant second.

I shouldn't even respond. But, I'm going to. I have upheld many, many oaths. Safe to say more than you ever will. I know the meaning of the words Honor and Commitment. I have been tested and not found wanting. I am not a NOPD officer. I am a retired Marine Corps infantryman. I know what it is like to be neck deep in the worst **** imaginable. I know that if any of my Marines had ever tried to hand over his weapon, and quit in the middle of a mission, that I would have put a bullet between his eyes.

I feel for these people. They can morn their losses once the mission is completed, or they have been relieved by others. Until then, they have a job to do. Officers from all over the country are in route to N.O. to help. These people have no connection what-so-ever to that city, but, they are willing to risk their lives to help her. When the going gets tough, the tough don't run. But again, you sir, wouldn't know anything about that would you?
