I know the subject has been beaten into the ground, but what the heck. I couldn't resist commenting once again on Saban's most recent antics after reading an article about Cowher leaving the Steelers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-steelers-cowhersdecision&prov=ap&type=lgns). In particular: Cowher, who led the Steelers to the playoffs 10 times, the AFC title game six times and the Super Bowl twice, met with Rooney and team president Art Rooney II on Tuesday and asked for several days to weigh his future plans following an 8-8 season. There was an understanding a decision would be made quickly because the Steelers don't want any top candidates accepting other jobs before talking to them. While the Steelers would have given Cowher until next week to make up his mind,he decided not to make them wait and called Dan Rooney on Thursday. It's not so much that Saban leaves teams thats gotten so many upset, it's how he leaves them. In contrast, Cowher didn't play games. He was upfront with his intentions, let everyone know when he made a decision, and didn't put his own ego ahead of his employer or his team. That's what I want in an LSU coach. Someone who stays here for a good long time, shows some loyalty, and when he's ready to move on, is upfront about the fact that he's considering leaving and treats the team and university fairly. Some of Cowhers players were near tears when he told them he was leaving...if any Dolphin shed a tear when Saban phoned in his resignation, it was one of joy no doubt. I am so glad that the yearly Saban Job Offer Watch we had to endure when he was coach at LSU is in the past. I appreciate what Saban did to build LSU into the program it is. But I really do think we've got the better end of the deal when we got Coach Miles, hat and all.
its all for $$$. cowher knew last year that he would "retire" because rooney wouldnt give him holmgren $$$. so he'll "retire" one year and then try to get big $$$ from so other team.
You missed my point. I don't care that Cowher wants a higher paying job or that Nick Saban didn't want a smaller paycheck when running back to the college ranks. It's how you leave. Saban lied and let things drag out. Cowher was upfront with his organization and didn't jerk them around. Believe it or not, someone can leave a job for a higher paying one and still leave with class. Leaving for more money, in most circumstances, isn't a bad thing at all.
