I think Saban is a great coach and did an amazing job for us. I think Marcus Randal is probably a good person and he probably did his best to get the most out of his ability with the opportunity he had at LSU. BUT I think that Saban should have realized what he had in Randal a long time ago. He should have looked at his recruiting tape and rescinded the scholarship offer. Or, after the 2002 season (Randal's third year in the program), he should have been able to look at Randal and realize that this guy did not have the potential to develop into a solid starting quarterback in the SEC. Or at the latest, he should have seen in the spring that after more than four years in the program Randal had not developed into a solid SEC quarterback. I think many LSU fans knew back in 2002 exactly what we had in Randal but Saban did not. I think that, like Fulmer did in recognizing that his true freshman had more of an upside for the coming season than his upper classmen, he should have recognized that the two redshirts had more upside and gone with them until one outshined the other. I know you can say Randal's statistics weren't bad this year, or that he was a fantastic runner. The fact is he was a nervous, very poor passer, and very poor coverage reader. I think outside of the quarterback this season. We had about as talented of a team as last season. I think even though we won nine games this season was a disappointment because I feel like the poor decisionmaking by our coaches with regards to the quarterbacks severely limited our potential. I salute Randal because he gave us his best and that is all anyone could ask. My criticism is of Saban or Fisher for not recognizing sooner what proved to be true and what many of us saw two years ago. Okay, now flame me.
Never liked Randall. Glad he's gone and I think most people would agree with me. Seems to be good guy, just not a good QB. So many high school QBs get moved to other positions when they come to college, why didn't this guy. I do wish him the best.
I think we didn't know about Russell not knowing the plays, not being able to check off at the line of scrimmage, and him not knowing cost us dearly at times. It is unfortunate, but LSU had NO QB capable of playing in the top half of the SEC this season on a consistent basis. Thats the simple fact. If we benched Randall, we would not have won 9 games this year or been in a New Years bowl, IMO. The coaches had to coach what they had. They had to make the most of a bad situation. If Mauck had played his Sr. year, we wouldn't be in this position. I don't think its the coaches fault. The only coaches call I question is playing Flynn the entire 3rd qtr. of the bowl game, without being willing to give him any reps the whole season. That lack of production for a qtr. cost us the game, IMO.
Read the rest. I never liked Randall as QB. I did not mean as a person. Hell, you could never say he wasn't devoted. The guy would stick his neck out to get first down. I did like his hard hitting style, but come on, you have to admit he wasn't in the top tier of QB's. And again I wish him luck in future. He will always be a tiger and if I was to meet him out somewhere he would get a drink on me.
The only thing I'll say in this regard is that Randall was not the problem today. Saban should have removed Derek Dooley as special teams coach a long time ago.
Thats what happens when you get close to one of your asst., when he sucks you bite the bullet and say "He'll get better"
If I could pick which coordinators and asst. to retain it would be: 1. Tommy Moffit-our guys outlast every team in the 4th Quarter 2. Will Muschamp-he studied under a great defensive mind, he has to have absorbed somthing. Everyone else fails to make the cut IMHO, Fischer and Williams like dust in the wind. OC - Boise St. OC has to be top notch, and is studying under Dan Hawkins unless he calls his own O. Special Teams - Either VTech's Spec. Team coach who has studied under Beamer has to be top notch or the Spec Team coach from Miss. St. under Sherrill, they had a bad ass special teams system.
Agreed for the most part. I know alot of people are down on Jimbo for conservative play calling, but it's really a reflection of the inconsistency at QB rather than his overall offensive philosophy. Most will disagree, but I still think he's an innovative play designer and I would like to see him retained. Saying that, if given the choice between him and the three you mentioned, I would keep those three before him.
If I can only keep three you have to go woth the Strength and conditioning of LSU over the past few years and also stick with defense. So your three look good to me. And TM may be the silent one out of the bunch. But like they say 9 months of hard work for three months of sucess.
