I hope the Tiger coaching staff watched some of the other kickoff and kickoff preparations after opening weekend. Memphis NEVER tried to kick "deep" the whole game. Everything from onsides, to squib kicks, to short kickoffs to the up backs. Why not? You will probably be letting the receiving team start at the 25/30 anyways. With these type kicks, there is always to chance the receiver mishandles the squib kick or the defensive players arrive about the same time as the up back trys to make the catch. Hope the Tigers remember that you can "fair catch" a kickoff. :geauxtige :geauxtige :geauxtige :geauxtige I just remembered something. VT calls themselves the Hokies, right? They used to be the VT "Gobblers." (As in turkeys) Am I wrong? If I remember correctly, Ole Miss played them in a bowl game when Archie was there. Must have been his soph. year. Spotted them 17 quick points and then beat them by 17.
For all the talk about the new kicking rule, in watching games, I didn't see any big hoopla- in fact, wouldn't have noticed had the commentators not said anything. Throw in the fact that there were some BIG mismatches and still no big runbacks, injuries, etc. (Unless I missed them elsewhere) it may not be AS significant as I thought.
Can't guarantee this information is correct, but looks like they've at least gone to a good bit of trouble to put this together. The New Kickoff Rule - Week 1 Data
