Other than football, how important are the other sports to you?

Do you consider NCs in other sports just as important or meaningful as a NC in football? Would you be willing to sacrifice all your other NCs in every other sport if it meant a NC in football?

With a NC in women's waterpolo, UCLA now has 100 NCs but who really cares if it can't win in football. Some LA journalist proudly stated on TV that UCLA did not differentiate between NCs between womens and mens sports, and that UCLA values all its NCs equally. But, that seems to be the problem. For a school that has the same rescources and access to the same recruits, at the CA high school level, as USC, UCLA's football program has to be considered a major disappointment. It starts from the top, where they don't feel that football is any more important than women's waterpolo. Heck, UCLA was willing to sacrifice its football program for the sake of political correctness when it hired Dorrell.

I like all of our NCs. We have a couple dozen in Track and Field, 5 in baseball, 2 in football. The major sports bring more attention though.

It's a good and valid question, and really depends on your perspective. Having lived on the west coast, I'll just say that football is not necessarily king out there. People are into volleyball, water polo, soccer, tennis and other sports, just a lot more than football. Here, it's another story. I think if your measuring stick is the "all sports" championships, then traditionally the UCLAs and Stanfords of the world will do well, even if they don't win in football, because they have athletic program diversity. You can debate whether those mean anything, but it does show overall athletic program diversity and excellence. Case in point, Florida, a SEC school has won them. LSU, usually finishes in the top 10. So, my view is that you take it for what it's worth, UCLA has won the most NCs and that's something they can be proud of----keep in mind many of those NCs are also in basketball, which is arguably as big a sport as football in many parts of the country. Also keep in mind that a decade ago, UCLA stomped USC regularly in football. It comes in waves, and Dorrell is not a bad coach, they are just slowly building the base back (also, they don't pay their players like USC does  and I would argue they don't have the same resources as a public school than USC does).

I wouldn't trade the other LSU NCs for one more football championship. No. The overall athletic accomplishments speak more for the AD and recruiting an overall student body worth talking about more than just a football powerhouse. Case in point, does LSU aspire to be a Miami, or a Florida or OSU?

I'm mainly a football fan, but I wouldn't trade 2 or 3 baseball championships for 1 more in football. The 5 titles in baseball are very important in my book, as are track and field also. I still remember the bottom of the 9th homer to win the CWS, and its one of the top plays in LSU history, because it won a national title. It doesn't get anymore clutch than that.

Basketball, but I don't want to wait another 10 years for a deep tourney run. Skip should run Brady's ass up the road NOW!:D

First, congrats to ucla on their achievement. There are lots of things however, being overlooked or at least not considered in the discussion. Semantics plays a role. Since the NCAA doesn't recognize a NC in Div 1A Football, those numbers aren't included. No big deal for the bruins since they'd only have one (1955) to count anyway. Much bigger deal for other schools who can claim quite a bit more. In fact, if USC included it's Football NC's, we would be at 106 (okay, I'll subtract 2003 and it still comes out to 105).

More importantly, the rule changes limiting schollies and the introduction of Title IX around 1980 permanently changed the landscape of college athletics. A full ride at a private school is probably in the neighborhood of $40k/year while at a state school, probably less than half that much. Therefore, a ucla could completely scholarship a baseball team but a stanford could probably only field half a team. Walk ons are also not so difficult to see at a state school whereas much more rare at private schools. Using 1980 as a rough cutoff for NC titles it's obvious where these changes had an effect. USC had 9 football NC's prior to 1980, 12 Baseball NC's and only 1 since, 9 Swimming and Diving and none since, 16 Tennis and only 4 since, 26 Track and Field and none since.

So while ucla had their way with us on the football field for nearly a decade, they produced 0 NC's during that time. Their recent coaches (Donahue, Toledo, and Dorrell) have typically been the highest paid employees in the state of California so it's not like they don't have the ability to compensate for talent. Makes Tedford look like a much better coach than he gets credit for.

I also wouldn't trade any other NC for one more in football but I bet ucla fans would give up their one badminton NC for just ONE more in football.

And since USC has no softball team, my favorite to win it all this year is  . My dream matchup is LSU and the gutties with ET pitching a shutout.

I am proud of them all, but football has always been the most important to me because I am a BIG football fan. I can take or leave the other sports.

    Scoreboard, biotch.

Almost 20 years since your last MNC in FB, y'all are HURTIN'.

PS Don't forget the schoolin' from January 3rd.

You really oughta try another CF message board where you might look a little better than here!
