    Years ago, when I taught at Springfield High before moving to Texas, a student of mine had his heart broken by his girlfriend, so he did the most logical thing--he punched his locker...and proceeded to spend the next month in a cast to repair his broken hand.

    He and the girlfriend got back together, all the way until the day before his cast was coming off--when she broke up with him again. So...he punched threw his truck window and broke and cut his hand.

    I remember thinking then (in my mid-20's) that his mom had to be embarrassed at his behavior. Now, that I have a teenager of my own (albeit a girl), I KNOW that his mom was embarrassed.

    He must have literally gotten a very "red shirt" which will probably result in a figurative "redshirt" deferment. Maybe that's why they call the deferment a "redshirt." Here's what wikipdedia says about it...
