In an article in the NO T-P, here's what Pelini said about his defensive scheme:

Well, it's official: get used to what you saw last Saturday, guys.

Yeah, well, Lou Tepper seemed plenty credible, too, having published a book on linebacking.

You're only as good as your last game, as both a player and a coach. Bo Pellini isn't exactly at the top of the defensive coordinator charts right now.

Breaking in any new defense on the road against a ranked opponent is not going to be smooth. Especially against a good quarterback used to picking apart zone defenses.

LSU is now #119 out of 119 Division I schools in pass defense. We have nowhere to go but up. These LSU players are talented and experienced. If Pellini is correct and they are just out-of-sync, then we can expect steady improvement. Here's to quick steady improvement. Starting now.

It could be worse, we could have Bill Clay as our DC and running the 3-3-5 or whatever it was. Folks it was the first game, on the road, against the #15th team in the nation, and we still won. You can't expect the first game in a brand new scheme to be executed perfectly. I remember when Saban's 2000 team got torched by Florida and Rex Grossman for 500+ yards and I also remember the torching by Roy Williams in the Cotton Bowl.
I think there was a total lack of execution by certain people. Our DE's were a non-factor and we have to find somebody who can provide a pass rush b/c the pocket almost never collapsed, which against a high-octane O = 500+ yards. I also don't think Vaughn or the LB's have much exp. in zone coverage which showed a lot.

    Oh Crap!!
He is not going to change anything and he will be hard headed and try and force it all year. I realize that zone can be a bit confusing initially when you are used to a completely different defense. But Saban seemed to get his defense prepared in a much much more complicated system where he lets the make the call on the field.

Sure it leads to a few busts but I would rather a few busts in a complex defense rather than 10 yard passes play after play.

Yes the defense will get better but the system and scheme will not be a success in the SEC. No more #1, #3, or #7 in defense as we are accustomed.

But Bo seems to think his will work that well. It will not.
Sure he had a top ranked defense at Nebraska but do you remember how horrible the Big 12 north was 2 years ago. The only bright spot at that time was who, Kansas State. That crap my work in the cream puff Big 12 north but not in the SEC.

I'm confident the players will get better with the defense but the system is flawed and is too simple to read and pick apart for a good team. The system is not going to work but hopefully it will work enough that our offense can overcome the crappy defensive scheme.

I saw you said in another post that Sam Keller would be starting on Sunday's one day. I wrote then and I'll even write more emphatically now that after watching the replay last night on Cox 37 that he is not an NFL QB. That arm is barely a PAC-10 arm.........his motion is very girlish. If that dude gets hit at all and has corners playing near his receivers, he won't be anything. LSU, just didn't do it so he looked like Joe Montana.

    Others disagree.

    CFN quarterback prospects for 2006

"Sam Keller, Arizona State (Jr.) – Keller gave a sneak preview of his vast potential in last year’s Sun Bowl, throwing for 370 yards and leading the Sun Devils to a comeback win in the first start of his career. His future is now."

I have to agree with Red on this one.
They were talking about how Keller could indeed pick the zone apart.
I was totally shell shocked with my comments the other nite even though
it did look like Lou Tepper all over again.
After getting used to defenses under NS who wouldn't be shocked at our
    defense the other nite?

I'm going to be optimistic because being any other way is really a downer.
It was only 1 game, 1 game for a new coaching staff, 1 game for the foot-
ball team under a new system and the first game right after a tragedy that
affected the whole football team, the state of Louisiana and the nation to
    a lesser degree.

That's cool. Being a top 10 QB in college and playing on Sunday's is two different things IMO. I just think from what I saw, the guy has a weaker than average college arm and will never play NFL footabll. Drafted maybe, that's fine, but never play.
