Take a look at Penn State's out of conference schedule:

    South Florida
    Cincinnati
    Central Michigan

    All at home

Hardly what I would call murderer's row. Most are not historically good teams either. Now, take a look at their records:

    USF (4-3)
    Cincinnati (4-4)
    Central Michigan (5-3)

Normally an OOC schedule like this would drop you like a rock. This year, they are downright respectable.

Meanwhile, LSU schedules a highly-touted Arizona State team, a perrenial Sun Belt champion in North Texas, and a desperation move of scheduling Appalachian State.

North Texas (2-6) including a loss to ULL
    Arizona State (5-4)

This just has been an unlucky year with our SOS. We miss Georgia and South Carolina from the East. Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State all drag us way down. If we are to have any asperations for a Rose Bowl bid, it will have to come from a generous human vote this year.
