Excerpted from a NOLA.com article on Saban's presser:

Don't sleep on Skip! Common sense tells you LSU was making moves behind the scenes as all this played itself out, with agents letting Skip know their clients were interested, etc.

In fact, I kind of pegged Jan 12 specifically since that's 3 weeks to the day prior to signing day. All of the bowl games are over, effectively, after the 1st, so that's nearly two weeks at least for a current college coach who we'd be interested in interviewing to be part of the process.

Some pro assistants and/or head coaches may be part of the mix, too, and are not hemmed in (as Charlie Weiss proved) by the NFL tampering rules that appy to intra-league hiring.

BTW, I think Skip should specifically mention Kirk Ferentz as a candidate, if only to help throw the Iowa camp into a tizzy and level the emotional playing field a bit before Saturday.

Better yet, contact his agent and imply that LSU wants to throw lots of money at him.

Bertman did not name names of those in whom he was interested, but said the school would not exclude coaches such as Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville and Louisville’s Bobby Petrino who agreed to contract extensions in the last few days.

I hope it includes Tedford and Spurrier as well.

I certainly like the idea of going after Spurrier.

Not to misunderstand me, I want to say that I have complete faith in Skip to find us a stellar coach, but I just hope we don't get caught in the same trap that Florida did: replace a great coach with a virtual unknown and suffer a bit the next few seasons.

CAUTION: When Spurrier left, Florida, just like LSU now, was widely considered to be the best coaching jobs in the country, but they went with Zook and have dropped farther than what they ever wanted.

I believe Tedford is locked up at Cal, and I did hear him say that he doesn't want to coach anywhere else. ESPN thunks (dummies) that Erickson and Davis are the early front-runners.

Might as well ask about Spurrier. I think we have a snowball's chance in hell at this point but may as well try. I think he might do some major damage to his reputation if he were to leave USC now.
