I just bought a Great Dane pup. She was very expensive and her health care will be very expensive. I purchased the most comprehensive policy offered by VPI (a Nationwide Insurance Company). It's like $30 bucks a month with a $250 yr deductible. Have any of you had any experiences with pet insurance? I'm thinking that it will probably pay for itself at some point in time, but wondered if any of you have had any experiences with pet insurance. I'll hang up and listen.
Every policy is different, and a lot of them or bad, but good ones are out there. A pet savings account is a better option. The best part is you have the cash in the event the pet never gets sick, but you really need to have it in place before owning the pet. Watch out for things like hereditary exclusions. These are common in the bad policies, and will really effect a bred dog more than a mutt.
I would do a lot of research on that to make sure what thos restrictions may be. As an example, boxers have chronic herditary hip problems, and often need REALLY expensive hip surgeries and replacements. If your policy restricts benefitso n those surgeries it isn't worth while. Look into the chronic problems of Great Danes. I would assume they have ACL and ankel problems just due to size. Make sure the restrictions are palatable and the benefits wortwhile.
I wouldn't consider it, probably. My beagle lived 16 years, saw the vet at least twice a year and had every ailment treated promptly. He had one operation to remove a tumor and in his last four years saw the vet more often for aging ailments. Overall, he averaged about $250 a year in vet expenses. With a $250/year deductable, I'd just have been giving money away.
Yeah, but Danes are so big that they require alot of anesthesia should they require surgery. One surgery could cost a fortune. Also, my local Humane Society is having an event on Saturday where you can have your dog microchipped for just $5. Definitely doing that.
I hope you have a good policy. When I worked in a Fortune 100 company, one of the associated companies sold pet insurance. It was considered free money for the insurer. Make sure your policy will really cover what you need it to. Again, hope yours is better than what I used to hear about.
No, you just need to put a pencil to it. Great Danes may require great bills, I don't know. But read the small print and make them define every term that is unusual.
It isn't your fault boss. We are conditioned to buy any insurance offered to us, no matter how shitty it is. People blow thousands each year on insurance and warranties they don't need or can't use.
