I thought this was ironic. In reference to the AP Poll, (the same one USC used to legitimize their "Championship" in 2003) Pete Carrol had this to say about LSU moving up to number one this weekend: "I have no idea how the points work and how it all adds up," USC coach Pete Carroll said Sunday night. "It has no bearing on anything for us. It didn't before and it doesn't now."
Polls don't matter anyway; you have to win games to stay where you are. Hell, unbeaten Missouri and Kansas aren't ranked highly, but I doubt they care because if you go unbeaten in a BCS conference, you are playing in a BCS bowl.
I work with a USC alum and as he walked by my office this morning I said "Number one" He says "Yea, so, it's the AP poll". I couldnt believe it- I had to laugh. Interesting how they'll swear by it when it helps them out, but not when it goes against them. I told him that if the AP poll is so meaningless than they should quit claiming their "championship" win.
The USC fans are saying that the AP was relevant in 03 because it was a part of the BCS back then. Faulty logic because the overall BCS ranking is what was relevant then as well. But they feel it was "valid" since it was a component.
thanks DRC, ya beat me to it. Yeah I thought that was funny how they all said in 2003 that was their "National Championship" and now that they are NOT number one in that poll, it means nothing to them. Hey USC if you dont get into the MNC, why dont you just challenge the winner of MNC to your own championship game claiming that yall were shafted because the WHOLE country knows yall should play in every MNC. I read on ESPN's website under the comments on their article reporting LSU #1 in AP poll, that USC fans were claiming they did actually challenge LSU to another "championship game" after we beat OU. Did anyone else hear this?
It was all over the internet, and most of us would have wanted it, I think. It was nothing buy empty threats, though. No one in a position to legitimately propose a challenge ever did, and even if they had, it would still have to be sanctioned by the NCAA, SEC, and PAC-10, which would have NEVER happened.
