Tuesday, June 21, 2005 By Mike Triplett Staff writer Wally Pontiff Sr. said plans are being finalized to expand the annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Baseball Classic to a weekend round-robin event in 2007, including LSU, Tulane, UNO and a rotating top national program. Pontiff said the initial dates have been set for March 9-11, 2007, at Zephyr Field. He said LSU and UNO have committed to the event. A Tulane spokesman said there have been discussions, but nothing is definite. http://www.nola.com/tulane/t-p/baseball/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1119335238178920.xml Pontiff said the weekend will be reminiscent of the Busch Classic and Winn-Dixie Showdown weekends at the Superdome, in which LSU, Tulane and UNO annually faced three out-of-state teams in a round-robin format. Pontiff said he has fond memories of attending those games with his late son, Wally Jr., who died in 2002. "That was our favorite thing as father and son," Pontiff said. "We'd go to three games a day for three days. It was a wonderful thing. I just wanted to bring it back."
