Why didn't Tennessee use their three time outs during the LSU scoring drive? They let LSU milk the clock down to 9 seconds. Did Phatimus think he could cash them in after the game or something?

That's a good question. I was too busy readying myself for a heart attack to think about that. Bad call by Fulmer, that's for sure.

I disagree. You don't give LSU any more time to manufacture a score.

Right, just go back to the Auburn game a few more seconds and who knows. Tennessee had to make a stop period and the clock was on their side, no use giving LSU more time and more shots at scoring. The problem was they just couldn't make the stop.

Disagree with the two previous posts. You have to attempt to have as much time on the clock if you are the defense going against a team about to score. Had Tenn slowed the clock with timeouts, there is no way LSU would have done any fooling around. Based on our inconsistencies of our offense today, we would have gone for the score and wouldn't have toyed with Tenn had they used timeouts...IMO

Following that logic Auburn should have been calling time outs on LSU's last drive which would have given LSU a couple more shots at the endzone from the 5. IMO Phat Phil made the right call, LSU just got the job done.

He was counting on the his D. He was thinking the worst thing was going to be a field.

    Phil had two options:

    1) Let LSU completely control the end of the game and score with seconds to play. Allowing LSU to do that while not calling any timeouts.

    2) At least slow the game up with timeouts, hope they score fast or hope for LSU's fifth turnover, and then go for some desperation plays with 30 seconds left and not 9.

IMO, the first option for a coach leaves too much up to the other team. At least with second option, a coach is being proactive....

Time outs do NOT give LSU any more time, certainly it doesn't give LSU any more downs. What it would have done is PRESERVE some time and maybe they would have gotten the ball back with a minute and a half instead of 9 seconds.

It gives the coaching staff time to gameplan. When a timeout is called, Jimbo has time to get the perfect play for a given down and distance situation. Not so without any timeouts....

I did not word my post correctly it seems.
