Can anybody help me? My laptop with Win XP using Firefox browser has developed a severe popup problem. Its so bad that even when I click on a link in one window it opens up another tab with advertising. I also have a very annoying side pop in. How do I stop all this?

XP? Get rid of that steam-powered computer and get a MacBook Air.

Probably need to salvage what you can and then F disc it. Oh and stop looking at porn, lime wire and pirate bay are equally bad

Firefox does allow a ton of popups. I never noticed them that much until I got addicted to online porn though.

I have it set to block popups but it doesn't work

Dude, you have a virus or malware, probably both. It is almost impossible to identify them because they hide. It is easier to just wipe it clean and then reinstall what you want on the PC. Even if you do locate the virus it has infected so much of your computer at this point a lot of what you might copy to install on your newly wiped PC will probably just put the bad stuff right back on. The internet is a really rotten place.

Shane's right. XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, so there's no more security patches released to fix vulnerabilities. Time to scrap it and update to a newer operating system.

I back up all my data to the cloud. If I upgrade is there any chance that whatever is infecting my computer is in the cloud a will reinfect the new operating system?

Possible. Depends on if you push stuff to the cloud or if it does it automatically. If you push, then it depends on when is the last time you did that. Were you having the pop up problem? If so then I'd say it is probably in there.

There are some pretty good protection platforms out there that could probably sniff out any infected stuff if you were to scan it prior to you putting it back onto your pc but I'd be very careful about it.

My advice for now, sit tight. Don't do any more cloud stuff and wait for one of the resident computer geeks to stop by and give you the real scoop.
