I am afraid that mctiger has this right: look at all those games this year, the OOC's--which should have been high-scoring rent-a-wins, but which, instead, became our usual "modus operandi:" "How long can we sleepwalk and still win the game?" Play like ours this year--winning, but for the most part, uninspiring, may have been the "human factor" in the selection process. Sponsors want an attractive team that scores points and thrills the folks--whether it be a Manziel--or a team effort; no one wants to try to sell Doritos when the game has a chance of being turned off for lack of action......
It's certainly understandable that the Cotton took A@M. You know the Cotton committee is licking their chops at that old Big 12 matchup. As for the Chick-Fil-A, I really thought Georgia would end up there.....strictly to help sell tickets. As it turns out, they make an extra $1.6M to play in the Capitol One bowl, against a very uninteresting Nebraska team. Frankly, I think LSU got the better and more interesting matchup in Clemson. Of course, I am not the one losing the cash.
No ones losing any cash. All of the bowl proceeds are dumpted into one pot and the SEC divides it up. Everybody gets an equal amount.
Is the Outback Bowl really that much better then the Chick-fil-A? To me, they're both 2nd tier bowls. One reason I'd prefer it over the Outback is because it's a New Years Eve night game instead of a New Year's Day morning start.
LSU only has LSU to blame. When you look like $hit against $hit teams as often as LSU has then youre bound to be questioned. Its a what have you done for me now society. The last three games for LSU has gone down to the wire against teams LSU should have beaten handily. Most of the media that Ive seen seems to be favoring LSU over Clemson, just most arent calling for LSU to be in a better bowl.
I read Texas A & M Alum are the decision makers for The Cotton Bowl. Texas A & M was bumped down to the CFA Bowl mainly due to Mark Richt's cryin, whine'in and moanin over another UGA loss in a critical big game backdrop. The Cotton Bowl Commitee (which was set to invite LSU) invited Texas A & M. LSU has The Sugar Bowl who prefer to make all the money off of Florida fans who (I'm told by business individuals in New Orleans) spend freely and spend often.
That's a very good point. For those who try to watch as much bowl football as they can, we will be the only game in town, but the Outback is played at the same time as three other games. The appeals of Steakhouse over Chicken Sandwich are the opponent (Michigan vs Clemson), the variety (3rd time in Atl since 2000, haven't been to Tampa since 1989), and the aura of the pecking order (Outback picks first, so it must be the "better" game).
all the bowls suck. the only thing you can hope for is to get a prestigious oppt. lsu is at a point where there are very few name teams with good seasons. i was hoping for OU or ND. Clem is definitely a rung or two down the ladder, but at least they arent NIll.
