Flynn definitely started a little slow, 3-7 for twenty something yards, and his final numbers were not all that great either considering we won 45-0. But I think the most important thing to take from his performance is that he seemed to make very good decisions on every play. For example, he rolled out for a naked bootleg in the first half and just as he turned, Titus Brown was right there. Instead of trying to force a pass to a covered wide receiver or even taking a sack, he threw the ball way out of bounds. Another couple of times when he was in trouble in the pocket and needed to take sacks, he took them and never got careless with the ball. He really only made one bad decision and that was the throw to the right side of the field in the second half that should have gone for a pick 6. The main thing I took from the game is that Flynn will protect the ball and really won't make many mistakes. We might all think it's hard to win games this way but Mauck was the same way in 03 and we all know how well that worked out. What do you guys think?
Scale of 1-10, I give him a 6.5. I completely agree about the decision making...throwing it out of bounds and such. Not only that, but I noticed a particular incompletion where he threw it to where nobody was...like he didn't have a receiver open enough to hit, but he didn't wanna throw it out of bounds and risk intentional grounding...so he just threw it out of everyone's reach...and I'm not talking about the one that sailed...that was a wet football thing.
I'm not worried about Matt Flynn. Smart player, but I do hope the offense gels early on againt Va. Tech. Geaux Tigers
See, I thought he should have thrown that one to Early in the flat. He had a couple of steps on his defender and might have been able to beat him to the edge and score. Against a good opponent, I don't think you can afford to just give plays away. Early was open just a few feet away.
Well, that's true, but you're probably going to get hit either way, so you might as well make a play. :thumb: I'll say this though, there was some potential danger there - a tipped ball or poor throw could have been six the other way. Still, I thought he could have gotten it out in front of Early and given him a chance.
Im not worried about him. It was his first game starting as THE Qb. He did what I expected to, as did the whole offense. Again, it was the first game. I doubt we see as many mistakes, false starts, etc, especially since we have two extra days to prepare for VT.
That's very nit-picky. What he did is exactly what he's taught to do. Throw the ball away instead of forcing it or taking a sack.
Come on, that's not forcing it. It was a naked bootleg. You know there is a pretty good chance that the defender will be there. The receiver was open near the line of scrimmage. That's not too much to ask. I think that was 2nd down and we wound up kicking a field goal. If he's going to throw it away every time the end doesn't bite on the naked bootleg, then they shouldn't call that play.
Maybe I'm wrong but as I remember it, he turned and Titus was pretty much on top of him. I thought it was a great play on Flynn's part to not try to force anything and just get rid of it.
