Roanoke paper's take on the postponement of the 2004 VT Game

When Virginia Tech and LSU agreed to a home-and-home football series back sometime around the turn of the century, the deal was the Tigers would come to Blacksburg in 2002, with the Hokies going to Baton Rouge, La., two years later.

LSU lived up its end of the original agreement, showing up on Sept. 1, 2002 at Lane Stadium, where they got smoked 26-8 by a Tech club featuring such stars as Lee Suggs, Kevin Jones, DeAngelo Hall and Jake Grove.

Thirteen months later, much to the chagrin of then-Tigers coach Nick Saban, Tech athletic director Jim Weaver somehow managed to orchestrate a deal that pushed Tech's trip to Bayou Bengal country to 2007.

Well, guess what? It's 2007 now, and there are no more escape moves left for the Hokies.

"I put this one off as long as we could," laughing Hokies coach Frank Beamer said this week. "We played five years ago. Then something came up and they [Weaver] asked if we would mind putting it off, and I said, 'not a bit!'

Not sure if it was in jest, but it really makes it sound like they were just chickening out of the 2004 date.

And the joke was on VT because we'd have given them a far less competitive game in '04--even though we were coming off the NC.

We're not coming off of anything this year, but are plowing straight ahead in pursuit of our second NC this decade!
