I was lucky enough to attend the Cubs game at Wrigley last night. I saw Todd Walker it a tater and also say Ryan Theriot's 1st major league hit. Unfortunately, he got picked off first, but the crowd gave him a nice hand and the coach patted him on the helmet. I, of course, was screaming L-S-U L-S-U :hihi:

    From the Cubs' site:

    09/12/2005 7:49 PM ET
Roster moves: Infielder Ryan Theriot, the Double-A West Tenn Diamond Jaxx Most Valuable Player in 2005, was promoted to the Cubs on Monday. A native of Baton Rouge, La., Theriot (TARE-ee-oh) batted .304 with 28 doubles and 53 RBIs for West Tenn. He's the third player in Diamond Jaxx history to hit .300 or better for an entire season.

Theriot no longer is a switch hitter, and has been focusing on batting right-handed this season.

"It was just something that needed to be done," he said.

He has played shortstop for the last six weeks.

"It doesn't matter [where I play] as long as I'm out there," he said.

His callup is bittersweet. The West Tenn team is tight, and Theriot didn't want to miss being in the playoffs. But he also didn't want to miss his first trip to the big leagues.

"It's a great group of guys, and we had a wonderful year," he said. "I wish them the best of luck, and wish I could be there. It makes it pretty sweet when you [can come up to the bigs]."

He can't go home just yet. His family in Baton Rouge has taken in some family from New Orleans who lost their homes and businesses because of Hurricane Katrina. Theriot was concerned about the city of Baton Rouge, which has nearly doubled in size because of evacuees.

He's familiar with Cubs second baseman Todd Walker, who played at Lousiana State.

"I watched him growing up," Theriot said of Walker.

I was at the game the night before and saw his major league debut. He missed his chance to be a hero by striking out in the bottom of the tenth. Walker got the game winning hit two batters later. It looked like it was going to be a grand slam.

It was my first trip to Wrigley and I have never been more impressed with a pro sports venue. It blew Yankee Stadium out the water.

I love Wrigley but people who are used to the newer stadiums would be confused. There are no big screens replaying everything and you really have to squint to read the pitch count, # of outs, etc. I love the 7th inning stretch tradition, but they are really scraping the bottom of the barrell for celebrities to lead "Take me Out to the Ballgame". We had Scott Turow.

Funny story about Theriot and Walker from the Alumni game in 2004-

Walker could not find his bat in the dugout. He picked up the one that was the closest in weight and lenght to his and asked the dugout who the bat belonged to and could he use it. Therior stepped up and siad the bat was his and he could use it the entire night if he liked. He only asked in return that Walker give him a few pointers when Spring Practice rolled around in a few weeks. Walker agreed. It is always great to see Tigers helping Tigers. :)
