just saw this posted today on Pro Football Talk: SABAN TO INTERVIEW WITH FINS ON FRIDAY A rock-solid, front-office type league source tells us that LSU coach Nick Saban will interview for the Dolphins head coaching vacancy on Friday morning. On Monday, we reported that the interview would occur this week. Since then, other media sources dubbed the report premature. Under his LSU contract, Saban has until January 1 to interview for an NFL job. There's also talk around the league that if Saban takes the job in Miami, Titans G.M. Floyd Reese could become the President of the Dolphins, since Reese and Saban are good friends.
Guys....Ive been reluctant to even say something about this because it scares the living crap outta me but our Division GM lives in Miami and our company has a sky box at the stadium. He hob knobs all the time with Miami brass since a few of them are his neighbors but he's been saying for almost a month that Miami's number 1 target is Nick Saban. This in itself is not surprising but apparently Miami is willing to do what Saban hasnt received before, control of most everything on the football side. This is a guy with great integrity and a no-nonsense type person. A great fella to work for and someone Ive known for almost 15 years now. He isnt a rumor mongering type guy and shoots straight. From what he saying the phins are ready to give Saban the keys to the entire personel side of the organization. A situation thats probably not be presented to Saban in his past dabbling with NFL teams. Im just keeping my fingers crossed that this breaks down during negotiations.
I will say this Until Saban or Skip says yes He is interviewing I wont believe anything these are ALL the same sources that said Cleveland two weeks ago, The Bears last year, Atlanta, NYG, and Indy the year before... So sure if you want to stress, stress. However until Saban who will be at practice today says yes I am interested. I am not going to lose any sleep, we all know Saban is every NFL's team #1 target, thats not news. It will be news when Saban says something and if he leaves, LSU is bigger then one man. The sun will rise tomorrow and LSU will still be LSU... And to be frank, I am growing weary of will Saban leave us every year. I am getting to the point I would like to have a coach that is committed to LSU, I believe Saban is, I think he stays. I may be living a pipe dream. But this crap every year is growing old.. At least for me it is.
I have heard that the only way Saban considers an NFL job is if he has complete control over personnel matters a la Bill Bellichick. Your insight absolutely scares me since I've heard the same - miami is prepared to give Saban full control over player decisions. wayne hizengua has money and is prepared to spend it which makes me think that money is not going to be an issue. hopefully, if this is true, Saban's wife hates miami, the sun and the constant threat of hurricanes!
The eternal optimist in me would like to believe that Saban isn't going anywhere anytime soon. But the obvious question is why would he interview for a job unless he was interested in taking it? I know there are many LSU faithful who are convinced Nick is perfectly happy, and I don't disagree with that. He's said so on numerous occasions. Furthermore, he's had ample opportunity to leave for the NFL, and rumors of his imminent departure have been rampant since he arrived at LSU. But this is different. As much as I would like to dismiss this as more hot air from the media and from those who would love to see Nick leave LSU (i.e. the rest of the SEC), I simply can't bring myself to find a positive spin on this news.
As a realist, I'd prefer to except the fact that Nick Saban will leave one day for the NFL if the situation is right. Miami seems to be putting in all on the table for Nick so don't be shocked if it happens.
That I dont argue, but we are all putting a great deal of stock into news outlets that have been as accurate as John Kerry... My point lets see what happens today, Saban is coaching practice, it will tell it all.
I'm listing to Colin Cowheard on ESPN Radio right now he is reporting that Nick will talk to the Fins. He also he would be crazy to take the fins job. He said LSU will be back next year in th hunt for the MNC. What helps is the home schedule and the talent we have coming back next year. I think LSU has more talent than the Fins. I will throw this out there. If Nick takes the job how about Rohan as the starter next year for the Fins. He is a free agent and from Miami.
What do you expect them to say? Saban doesn't need permission to have his agent talk to the NFL, which is probably where many of those rumors get started. Sexton talks to a GM and it leaks out ... then everyone assumes Saban is interested in the job. If Saban wants a formal interview, then he'll let Skip know and then we will know. And should Saban ever take another job, he'll let Skip know and then we'll know. As of today, there is nothing for them to tell us...
