You can see his ratings for this week either at his site at: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt05.htm Or on my BCS Standings standings page which currently is a more readable format: http://clovis.mudbuginfo.com/ncaa/bcs_standings.php I'd really like to know what kind of formula he uses that could put a 3 loss Minnesota and Michigan in front of 1 loss LSU, Georgia, or UCLA. I know that at some point SOS should override having 1 less loss, but 2 less losses? Apparently he feels strength of schedule is more important than actually winning games...
how exactly is a 1 loss Texas Tech team in front of us when we have a harder schedule rank and more wins against top 30 teams?
That's why the PAC 10 guys always point to this nerd as the "guru" on power ratings and such. He gives way too much credit for road games for one thing. Losing on the raod can be better than winning at home in many cases on his index.
My guess is that he really values performance against some predetermined spread (betting maybe). A few years ago, I think it was 2001, TN beat FL at the end of the season. Tennessee was ranked 3 spots lower than Florida. From his presentation: Tennessee had a better record; only 1 loss vs 2 for Florida Tennessee achieved this superior record against a tougher schedule. Tennessee had a better record against top 10 Tennessee had the same record as Florida vs top 30 Tennessee had a better ELO Chess ranking than Florida Excluding head to head, Tennessee's lone loss was to a higher ranked opponent than Florida's While I can see that a model like this shouldn't be concerned with head to head, there is the little problem of Tennessee beating Florida in the Swamp no less. My guess is the model favors winning (or losing) style over the substance of winning. This may be great for betting purposes, but it sure is poor at simulating a tournament.
Next year we should schedule USC, Texas, and Miami for our out of conf. games. We would then be #1 in the BCS regardless if we win or lose! Sagarin has to look at his poll and think, man my math sucks. Somebody needs to B**** slap this guy!!!
Sagarin has been screwing us over in the computers since 03, i remember him well...does not give any respect to SEC teams
You act like he has some personal agenda. You do realize, after he makes the formula, it's applied the same way to all teams, SEC included, right? I do question his formula, but it's crazy to imply he has some kind of bias against the SEC.
I said this last year: Sagarin's ratings are crap. Anyone who puts Harvard at #37 overall, and in front of Arkansas (with Matt Jones), Alabama (with that defense they had) and several other decent Division 1A teams is on crack. Either of those teams and several others would have stomped a mudhole in Harvard last year. I don't care that Harvard was 11-0. They aren't even a top D-1AA team because they don't have athletic schollies. That's one reason they don't participate in the D-1AA playoffs...they'd get killed by the good teams at that level like Western Kentucky, Appy St. and so on. Sagarin needs to fix his system and the BCS needs to make him do it.
