Odds are, we are looking at one of the Colt's getting the award...my money would be on Brennan from Hawai'i.
Don't overlook Blake Mitchell. The dude was pretty darn effective against a league with very good defenses. He had a very high yards-per-attempt stat, not a bad TD/Int ratio, and was more mobile than average. He's also a 3-year starter heading into the season. I would say that he is, going into the season, either the #2 or #3 QB in the SEC behind Andre Woodson and maybe Erik Ainge.
I can't complain about Mitchell when they've listed a quarterback from LSU who's only started one game.
I'm not going to complain because 8 of the 12 predicted starting quarterbacks from our league made a list of 35 of the best QBs in the nation. The percentages there are ridiculous.
It will be interesting to see how Brian Brohm plays with a new coach in place at Louisville. I would put him in the lead in the All American running to start the season. Sam Keller at Nebraska should raise the Cornhusker bar to a point where they will be back in serious contention for the Big 12. I have a feeling that Ainge is going to be tentative with his knee to start with. It may be a long year for him with less talent and less experience at the wide out slots. Flynn will do well, but he will have to have his "A Game" ready when he steps on the field against Virginia Tech. The media favorites will be Chad Henne and Booty Boy. Probably the most promising QB missing from this list is Jake Christensen from Iowa.
I worry that a new QB and a new offense will take three or four games to completely gel . . . and VT comes in game two with last years #1 defense.
For his sake I hope so but there are definitely some serious reasons as to why he left ASU and it had nothing to do with ability. Interesting, if he'd stayed at ASU, the Pac would have 6 players on the list including 4 in the top 11. I'm sure both Michigan and USC will put together a campaign to support their QB's in terms of the Heisman, can't blame it all on the media. And if there are losses or no numbers, a campaign isn't supportable. Jarrett and Smith are gone but the WR group coached by Morton will be amazing this year.
I was really impressed with Sam Keller when we played against him in '05. He just completed everything he threw. I'm not about to drink the Blake Mitchell kool-aid. His best asset as QB was Sidney Rice... Brandon Cox? I've never been that impressed. His running backs have been the saviors of his offenses. I'm not sold on Colt Brennan. That Hawaii system is like the one at Texas Tech. Amazingly those teams rack up the points and yards like crazy, but notice that they never actually win when it's important. I'm also not sold on Colt McCoy. I think he's very average, and we wouldn't know his name at all if Ryan Perrilloux had gone to Texas. And then there's Matt Flynn...I can only hope he can live up the expectations.
Flynn should come in to the VT game with the maturity to handle the adjustments. LSU's defence will also be a big factor in keeping pressure off of Flynn to make things happen immediately. If Flynn doesn't give up any careless turnovers, he should do fine.
