Someone on tigerbait.com asked about 5-star flops. I asked if JV should be included in this category. Apparently it offended them that I would say something bad about an LSU player, while they are calling players from other teams "losers" and such. Since his great freshman year, he really hasnt done much. My definition of a flop is someone who falls far short of their potential and expectations. JV, to my mind, has done this. A 5-star is expected to be the star of their team, the end up a first day draft pick. He WAS the star in 2003 (though I think a healthy Addai would have done better). But since then, he has been a flop. agree? disagree?
Ofcourse I disagree. True he has struggled a little since '03 (though I wouldnt say hes looked bad), but in '03 he practically could do no wrong. He ran through, around, and over everybody and was as important of a factor in our title as just about anything. If not for '03 you could make a case for him being a bust, but because of his play that year I cannot call him a complete bust.
i dunno i feel bad for him...he came out blazing in 03 and everyone thought he was destined for greatness....he has one more year left and i think this will be a good year for him but what i do like about him is he doesnt complain and he enjoys what he does on special teams...
many people make the argument that the 2003 o-line was the star, not JV. I have to agree with this. The holes were always there, they just need someone fast enought to hit the hole before it closed.
He isn't a flop. What he did in '03 deserves the respect of Tiger nation for the rest of his playing time. Live up to his freshmen season promise? No he hasn't done that.
Potential and expectations are two different things. Sometimes fans expect way more than a player can deliver. They see a 5 satr rating and expect him to be an allamerican from freshman year on.. X carter could be an example of that. as for jv, no he is not a 5 star flop.. he has another season to go and you can;t forget the contributions he made in 03.... he seems to be underachieving for a couple seasons but not flopping.
it is unfair to call JV a five star flop, but he has been quite disappointing the last 2 years since the NC. He is 5 star based on the estimates of some supposed gurus, so I put little validity in those hs rankings. Would I be a 5 star if i played in a 6 team HS conference where 4 of the teams are below .500 winning %, yet I run for 1800 yards and 20 TDs? Recruit ranking is biased and subjective at best. but to reiterate my point, yes JV has been disappointing since his breakout year.
If JV never gains another yard he isn't considered a flop in my book..... What he did for LSU in 2003 was flat out amazing imo........ I hope he rehabs that knee and gets back on the field for LSU.
I don't think the 5 star rating is given by the athlete, so the flop/bust should be given to Rivals, Scout, & us fans. It's unrealistic of us fans to expect a kid to be All-American from his freshmen year. Doucet was the jule of his class & he's ok but not AA so far. Now next year because he's older in the system he may live up to the hype.
