Is it in the best interest of LSU for Ryan Perrilloux to redshirt this year?

I am looking forward to an awesome season by JaMarcus Russell this year and hope he excels and plays great for a couple of years. Matt Flynn is as deserving a player as any and I'd be very comfortable with him as the backup for Russell.

In my opinion, LSU is very solid now (next couple of years) with JR at qb and it would be great to extend RP's college career by a year with the redshirt.

Please coach Miles, don't blow this opportunity to solidify the qb position for the next 5 years!

He might not have a choice. As nice as a redshirt would be, I don't see it happening.

Of course, no matter what was said during recruiting.........
Ryan himself will want to redshirt after 4 or 5 games if (big if) JR plays the way we all think he will. I don't want to waste a year on RP just to watch him hand the ball off in the 4th qtr while up 30.....

Now after saying this, I want RP prepared for each and every game as if he was going to play because you never know when he'll be needed..

I say with out a doubt yes!! He can still be ready in case an injury occurs....I just don't see why he would want to waste a year. He probably won't get many chances to play this year unless someone gets injured. I say redshirt and learn the system and be ready for next season.

It all depends... it's really hard to say. If I were asked this same question BEFORE JR ever took a snap at LSU, I would have more than likely said "let him battle for the spot" being how he was highly-touted out of HS. Back then, I wasn't really used to highly-touted recruits coming to LSU, and I thought he could do damn well what he wanted with the QB position--I really thought he'd start and take us all the way! Now I know that it's a bit harder to take the SEC by the horns. I really do think RP is good enough to start for us, but I HIGHLY doubt that he's the best man for the job this season. I think we have WAY too many offensive weapons to NEED a dual-threat QB. IMO, we need someone like Mauck (or rather Davey) who can work the offensive side of the ball with relative ease. I think Matt Flynn would be the ideal QB, but JR obviously has the god-given talent to thrive with jimbo's ideologies... I think JR will have a phenomenal year, BUT I'd like to see RP as his backup. Sorry Matt, but JR and RP have mega-physical- advantages over you!

If I coached the team, RP would redshirt until Russell got hurt...

He would be 2nd string on the health depth chart barring an injury

But would be 3rd string on a blowout depth chart, with Flynn mopping up

    Just one man's opinion

Physical advantages aren't everything. Tom Brady isnt as physically gifted as Aaron Brooks, but who would you choose? Plus Matt is no slouch he has a strong arm and can run with the best of them. He supposedly has a 4.5 40 time. What will make the difference is who manages the game the best......and who knows who that will be. Either way we won't be dissapointed with any of the three when/if they step up to play.

Casey, I'm sure you would know better than all of us, but what do you think Ryan thinks about redshirting? It seems like he wanted to go somewhere where he could start right away. If that's the case it seems like LSU is the place he wants to be, but if he wants to "build for the future" it seems like he'd want to be at Texas...
