Just read DandyDon and he's saying that JT Wise, Robert Lara and maybe a couple others are not getting their scholarship for next year.

What you guys think of this?

I'm all for a new coach bringing in his type of players, but they were offered a scholarship by LSU and I think LSU should honor it. I felt the same way when Brady ran off a bunch of players when he was hired. It's one thing to come to a mutual agreement that it's best for a player to leave but taking their scholarship doesn't seem right to me. Schools expect players to honor their commitment so why shouldn't they expect the same of themselves? JMO

But what if these players weren't doing what they were suppose to be doing to earn their scholly? That's part of their commitment to LSU.

You can't afford to keep players around in baseball and basketball like you can in football. It's a numbers game.

I agree. This could have a very negative effect on recruiting. I haven't followed baseball close enough to comment on the players who were cut, although I know Lara was a big disappointment. However, he came to LSU believing he had a 4 year scholarship, and that should be honored. In my mind it is a matter of integrity.

I mentioned this yesterday, PM meet with all the players individually and talked about their future roles with the team. With this being the last year to transfer without sitting out a year, I suspect many of the players came to a mutual agreement.

For instance, Wise probably agreed it was time to go. He has a potential future in the MLB and didnt get the playing time he needed this year and I am sure he wanted more playing time to develop and increase his draft stock. Same for Lara, he struggled and PM probably told him that he is bringing in a few new guys. We need a catcher who can keep from everyone stealing 2nd base, we had a dismal % this year.

I expect Mitchell, Dean, Ochinko, Hollander, Pontiff, Bradford, the rest of the young pitchers, and the freshman he brought in to stay with the team.

I agree that it would be kinda harsh just to give the players a choice on returning or not with a scholarship. But I think that PM is thinking in terms of their best interest. If this wasnt the last year to transfer, I wouldnt see PM doing this. I think mnay teams will be doing the same thing. Look for this to be a summer with the most transfers we have seen in a year around the league.

One reason could be the new scholarship rules that will be in place for next year. Max of 27 players will be able to get a scholarship but baseball will only be working with 11.7 scholarships to hand out. Also, the minimum scholarship to give out has been moved up to 1/3 so scholar ships will be given in bigger chunks than previous. So, they might have to scholly "taken away" or they could be getting re-worked.

im not sure about what laval and bertman did (i dont remember them pulling schollies), but evidently this is not uncommon in college. ive heard many times of players playing for their degrees. you dont do well and youre gone. of course, youre not talking about anything close to full rides, so i guess its not as bad as it could be.

All scholarships are offered on a year-by-year basis and no player is guaranteed more than their current year in any sport. Baseball players don't even get full scholarships, they have to split up 11 scholarships between them.

If a player is not cutting it, a coach is not doing a favor to himself, his team, LSU, or the player by keeping him on the team. He won't play any and saps scholarship money from his teammates. He could transfer to Nicholls or Northwestern and start. Sometimes a good coach needs to encourage this.
