Sophomore receivers and linebackers shine in scrimmage

The LSU Tiger football team conducted its first public appearance under new head coach Les Miles on Saturday when both the first and second team offenses and defenses squared off in front of 8,233 confused fans in Tiger Stadium for its new spring scrimmage.

“This was a good way to wrap up the spring,” said head coach Les Miles. “We’ve had a good spring. We got what we needed to out of our 15 practices. Now we’re ready to go from here.”

The scrimmage was different in that it was not labeled as a game but more as a practice. Under former head coach Nick Saban, the team was divided into two teams, a purple team and gold team with a game simulated for the fans. The new formula under coach Miles calls for a situational scrimmage where the first team offense meets the first team defense in first down, third and short, third and long, goal line and two-minute offensive and defensive situations. The offense was perhaps the surprise of the evening, outshining the defense at times behind the guidance of quarterbacks JaMarcus Russell and Matt Flynn. Russell established himself as the better passer earlier in the contest throwing 17 of 30 for 223 yards and no interceptions but as Flynn took more snaps his production increased by matching Russell’s numbers going 17 of 29 for 234 yards and two interceptions.
