SC hires Thompson Former East Carolina head coach new defensive coordinator By JOSEPH PERSON Staff Writer USC first-year coach Steve Spurrier has hired former East Carolina head coach John Thompson as the Gamecocks’ defensive coordinator, Spurrier announced Thursday morning. Thompson, who was fired last month after going 3-20 in two seasons at ECU, has been the defensive coordinator at Southern Miss, Arkansas and Florida. He arrived at Florida in 2002, the year Spurrier left Gainesville for the NFL. Thompson said he plans to run an aggressive 4-3 scheme at USC, with a mix on man and zone coverages. Thompson also will coach the Gamecocks’ linebackers, leaving Spurrier with only hires to make to complete his first USC staff – a defensive line coach and a secondary coach. Ron Cooper, one of three Lou Holtz assistants retained by Holtz, also could have a hand in the secondary, Spurrier said.
He just knew he wouldn't be able to grasp Saban's offense, so he quit before he was fired. I wonder if Spurrier will try and interview Saban for his secondary coach, I hear he's a good one. Heck, everyone else want him.
nope, he must be related to the Kerrys. He changes his mind alot and goes in which ever direction the wind takes him.
