  2. We can go around and around with this and still be at the same spot.

In the wake of Tiger Rag being removed from the band list because of the ********* chant, I got a good feeling that if the students dont police themselves the powers that be will.

I do understand its a way to stand up to the "man" but jesus they are cutting off their nose to spite their face.

There is only one way and one way only to stop this without removing the band completely from playing during the game and pay attention here: Explain to your kids that are at the game that this is not acceptable behavior, that people who feel the need to resort to using the F-word are simply uncreative and simple minded. Instead of covering their ears or trying to ignore the fact that it is being said just talk with them, kids these days are alot smarter then we were at that age.

I know there are alot of people that are bothered by this, but perosnally I am more worried about the actions of this new breed of student during tailgating. The chanting does not effect me because I had to explain to my kids why I used those words in front of them when me and their mom got together. If someone is acting or doing something that will effect the way ALL of US tailgate then they are screwing around something that I take pride in and wait 8 months a year to do!

  3. As I recall, CLM has a 10 year old son and a 12 year old daughter ...are you saying that he's irresponsible for allowing his kids to come to the games??

Just checking. Because I've already been shot down and red-x'd after trying to state my case on this issue from the standpoint of a 43 year-old father.

I regularly bring my 12 year-old son to the games...and sometimes my 10-year old daughter. And some here (like you) have basically said this is an adult venue and I'm irresponsible for allowing him to attend.

Does that suggestion go for CLM as well?

AGAIN - Let me repeat - it's not about the individual vulgarity - which we'll always have. Instead, this is about the new and improved form of group F-chanting.

"F-U-Spurrier" was being chanted (by my estimate) over and over in unison by several thousands of students.

I have no idea how CLM feels about that as a coach, but as a father...I have a pretty good idea.

  4. - The student section is always evolving and will find a way to do what it wants to do. I'm sure when they put the oweee-e-owo thing in the powers that be thought nothing "dirty" could come of it. The student section has been doing the "You Suck" for two years now (if I remeber correctly), if they cared that much it would have been shut down already. The problem the powers that be had is the "Cocks," part, which is hypocritical because LSU is selling officially sanctioned merchandise that says "Beat The Cocks", an obvious sexual refrence.

There's really no way to "police" this. FU SPURRIER was a collective chant started by a few individuals and caught on. The band didn't start it. Students did. Unless you remove the entire student section, chants the student section want to do will be done. Taking away 3,000 tickets won't accomplish anything. (Except generate more revenue, then again if they wanted to generate more revenue they wouldn't have limited the number of student ticket upgrades to 500 a game.)

How is that going to stop it? IMO, the FU SP chant goal was to "tell that" to USC/Darth Visor. It obviously worked if the entire stadium/national tv audience could hear it. I'm not saying the FU chant was good. I didn't agree with it. I didn't see a problem at all with the "You Suck, Cocks" chant though.
  5. LSU has never (as far as I can recall) been 100% on board with stuff like this. We were supposed to white out Spurrier one year, but not many people did it. I dont know why- honestly I dont really care. It's a great idea, but in the end, I just wanna see a game. I think it could be because we have two dominant colors, we're not just crimson or just maroon.

I couldnt hear it either. Could hear the cheers for the MTSU game because they showed the student section on tv.
My husband and I were also students at that time, and remember the days of thrown cups and such. We were talking about it just this morning and we both agreed that while we liked it and thought it was awesome at that time (cursing, carrying on, etc) we're glad to be otta there. While it was no picnic in there, I cant recall any loud cheers of f-bombs.

I also believe that the present students are spoiled. When you've sat through losing to UAB, or other horrible losses you know not to chant overrated or the other stuff they've been doing.

I also remember those guys starting that dance- I hated it from the start. Too much like ND's thing.

Throwing cups and other things on the Georgia team is okay....just dont say the F word while doing it.
  6. Thanks, SugarLSU for clearing that up.
  7. I thought the F you Spurrier was out of line and did not participate in it. I did not however, have a problem with you suck cocks chant. If it is OK for USC fans to have shirts and hats with the word COCKS in huge letters rather than game cocks, and then write university of south carolina in really small letters in an obvious attempt to get a reaction and go for a cheap laugh then it sure as heck ought to be OK for someone else to use that exact same reasoning against them.

Every freakin's usc fan I saw had something with the word COCKS in giant letters and hardly any of them had anything which said "Game cocks" on it. The LSU bookstore was selling shirts all week that said "beat those cocks" on it and I have seen that from more than one school in the SEC when usc is coming to town. It is hardly just LSU.

The F you stuff was definately out of line...

  8. If my parents hadn't taken me to Tiger games since birth I think I'd have some issues with them present day. I don't remember the games very much (or at all) but that's the point. The only memory I have from my pro 10 year old days is walking out of the West upper (I think) and being like DAMN. I'm sure I saw some dudes drinking too much and I heard some vile language at the family tailgate, but that didn't mold who I am. Upbringing and friends (and maybe TV) mold who you are.

I hate to say it but no parenting (except maybe strict religious and abusive) is going to make that much of an effect on whether a 18-22 year old is going to join with his/her other students in chanting obscentities. It's peer pressure. I hang with a lot of friends in the student section. We come from some very different upbringings. I think we could be considered as "good" kids. We don't do drugs, smoke, etc. We all have decent to 4.0 grades in college. We do drink, but what percentage of college student don't? Every single one of my friends was chanting FU Spurrier.
  9. My first game, fans sitting nearby kept yelling, "Give him a watermelon" after Terry Robiske fumbled. My father had to explain to me what they meant.
