Stupid question about LB position names

    Does anyone know why and how we call the LB positions Sam, Mike, and Will

    Mike(middle) Strong side (Sam) and Will (weakside)

    But why were these positions named after his way. is it because of certain people that played these positions

    Just a guess, but it is probably just to reduce the words used for each position down to one syllable for dicussion and practice.

    It's also because nobody wanted to be called the weak linebacker.

    Weak, strong, and middle are words that can be used for other calls. So, if you need to call a middle stunt, the linebacker doesnt hear middle and get confused. If you call a middle stunt, mike fire, then the mike linebacker knows you are talking about him.

    I believe so, for the 4-3 at least.. with 4 LB's i believe its sam, luke (left inside), rick (right inside), and will.

    ALL you need to know about linebacking is in the Lou Tepper book. Read it. ;)

    thats the problem, i did read it. now i don't even know a linebacker from a nickelback :wink:
